กาลครั้งหนึ่ง มีหมาป่ากับหมาจิ้งจอกได้สาบานตัวเป็นเพื่อนตายว่า…
จะไม่ทำอันตรายต่อกัน และจะช่วยกันทำมาหากิน
โดยหมาจิ้งจอกมีหน้าที่ไล่ต้อนสัตว์ป่าที่จะมาเป็นอาหาร
ส่วนหมาป่าร่างใหญ่ ก็คอยจับสัตว์ป่าเหล่านั้น
แล้วแบ่งอาหารกันกินอย่างอิ่มหนำสำราญทุกวันไป…สมเป็นเพื่อนกันโดยแท้

แต่อยู่มาไม่นาน ได้บังเกิดความแห้งแล้งกันดาร ทั่วทุกย่อมหญ้าในป่านั้น
บรรดาสัตว์ป่าน้อยใหญ่ต่างเดือดร้อนเหลือประมาณ
เพราะอาหารหายากยิ่งขึ้นทุกวัน
หมาป่ากับหมาจิ้งจอก ถึงกับอดอาหารติดต่อกันเป็นเวลาหลายวัน อยู่เสมอ

จนในที่สุด หมาป่าไม่สามารถทนหิวได้อีกต่อไป
จึงกระโจนเข้ากัดหมาจิ้งจอกเพื่อนตายของมัน
เพื่อหวังกินเป็นอาหารจะได้พ้นจากความตาย เพราะไม่มีอะไรจะกิน
หมาจิ้งจอกก็ดิ้นร้องขึ้น ก่อนจะกลายเป็นอาหารของหมาป่าว่า…
