พจนานุกรมฉบับราชบัณฑิตยสถาน พ.ศ.2542 ศาสนา “ลัทธิความเชื่อถือของมนุษย์อันมีหลัก คือ แสดงกำเนิดและความสิ้นสุดของโลก เป็นต้น อันเป็นไปในฝ่ายปรมัตถ์ประการหนึ่ง แสดงหลักธรรมเกี่ยวกับบุญบาปอันเป็นไปในฝ่ายศีลธรรมประการหนึ่ง พร้อมทั้งลัทธิพิธีที่กระทำตามความเห็นหรือตามคำสั่งสอนในความเชื่อถือนั้น ๆ “ศาสนาจึงมีความหมายในลักษณะต่าง ๆ ดังต่อไปนี้
1. ตรงกับภาษาอังกฤษว่า “Religion” คำในภษาละตินว่า “Religio” แปลว่า “สัมพันธ์” หรือ “ผูกพัน” ซึ่งหมายถึง “ความสัมพันธ์ระหว่างมนุษย์กับพระเจ้า” (Man and God) หรือ “ความสัมพันธ์ระหว่างมนุษย์กับเทพเจ้า” (Man and Gods) ด้วยการมอบศรัทธษบูชาพระเจ้าหรือเทพเจ้าผู้มีอำนาจเหนือตน และความเคารพยำเกรงศรัทธาดังกล่าวประกอบด้วยองค์ประกอบ 4 ประการ ดังนี้
1.1 เชื่อว่าพระเจ้าทรงสร้างสรรพสิ่งทั้งหลายทั้งปวงในจักรวาล
1.2 เชื่อว่าคำสอนศีลธรรมและกฎหมายเป็นสิ่งที่พระเจ้าหรือเทพเจ้าทรงกำหนด
1.3 เชื่อคำสอนของพระเจ้าหรือเทพเจ้าโดยไม่ต้องพิสูจน์
1.4 อุทิศตนแต่พระเจ้าหรือเทพเจ้า
2. ศาสนามาจากศัพท์เดิมในภาษาสันสฤกตว่า “ศาสน” ตรงกับคำในภาษาบาลีว่า “สาสน” แปลว่า “คำสั่งสอน” หรือ “การปกครอง” โดยมีความหมายตามลำดับ ดังต่อไปนี้
2.1 คำสั่งสอน แยกได้เป็น “คำสั่ง” อันหมายถึงข้อห้ามทำความชั่วที่เรียกว่า ศีลหรือวินัย และเป็น “คำสอน” อันหมายถึงคำแนะนำให้ทำความดีที่เรียกว่า ธรรม เมื่อรวม “คำสั่ง” และ “คำสอน” เข้าด้วยกัน จึงหมายถึง ศีลธรรม นั่นคือ มีทั้งข้อห้ามทำความชั่วและคำแนะนำให้ทำความดี
2.2การปกครอง หมายถึง การปกครองจิตใจของตนเอง ความคุมดูแลตนเอง กล่าวตักเตือนตนเองอยู่เสมอ และรับผิดชอบการกระทำของตนเอง บุคคลผู้สามารถบังคับจิตใจตนได้ย่อมจะไม่ทำความชั่วทั้งในที่ลับและที่แจ้ง ลัทธิ คือ คำสอนหรือหลักความเชื่อนั้นๆ ที่อาจจะเกี่ยวกับเรื่องใดเรื่องหนึ่ง เช่น การเมือง เศรษฐกิจ การศึกษา ฯลฯ
