สมาคมอาเซียน เป็นการรวมกลุ่มกันของประเทศในแถบเอเชียตะวันออกเฉียงใต้ โดยมีสมาชิกทั้งหมด 10 ประเทศ ได้แก่ ไทย อินโดนีเซีย มาเลเซีย ฟิลิปปินส์ สิงคโปร์ บรูไนดารุสซาลาม เวียดนาม พม่า ลาว และกัมพูชา ซึ่งประชาคมอาเซียนประกอบด้วย 3 อย่างที่สำคัญ คือ ASEAN Security Community – ASC , ASEAN Economic Community – AEC and ASEAN Socio-Cultural Community – ASCC . โดยประโยชน์ที่ประเทศไทยคาดว่าจะได้รับจากการเปิดประชาคมครั้งนี้ คือ
1) การค้าระหว่างไทยกับประเทศอาเซียนจะคล่องและขยายตัวมากขึ้น กำแพงภาษีจะลดลงจนเกือบจะหมดไป
2) ตลาดของไทยจะใหญ่ขึ้น เพราะสินค้าที่ผลิตในประเทศไทยสามารถส่งออกไปยังอีกเก้าประเทศ
3) ความเป็นประชาคมจะทำให้มีการพัฒนาเครือข่ายการสื่อสารคมนาคมระหว่างกันเพื่อประโยชน์ด้านการค้าและการลงทุน
4) ได้รับประโยชน์จากปริมาณการคมนาคมขนส่งที่จะเพิ่มขึ้นในอาเซียนและระหว่างอาเซียนกับจีน เพราะไทยตั้งอยู่ในจุดกึ่งกลางบนภาคพื้นแผ่นดินใหญ่
