ได้รับอนุญาตให้เปิดทำการสอนตั้งแต่วันที่ 3 มิถุนายน พ.ศ. 2503 โดยทำการสอนชั้นมัธยมศึกษาปีที่ 1 แบบสหศึกษา มีนักเรียนเริ่มแรกจำนวน 13 คน แยกเป็นนักเรียนชาย 9 คน นักเรียนหญิง 4 คน มีครูจำนวน 3 คน แยกเป็นครูชายจำนวน 2 คน ครูหญิงจำนวน 1 คน มีนายธเนศวร์ ไชยวรกุล ทำหน้าที่เป็นครูใหญ่ สถานที่ใช้ศึกษาได้อาศัยศาลาพุทธนิคมจอมทอง (วัดดั้ง) หมู่ที่ 8 ตำบลข่วงเปา อำเภอจอมทอง จังหวัดเชียงใหม่ ต่อมาคณะกรรมการก่อสร้างอาคารเรียนได้ไปทำการปลูกสร้างในที่ดินของวัดพระธาตุ ศรีจอมทองวรวิหาร ด้านทิศใต้ การปลูกสร้างได้เริ่มเมื่อเดือน กรกฎาคม พ.ศ. 2504เป็นอาคารไม้ 2 ชั้น 6 ห้องเรียน หลังคาใบตอง ราคา 45,000 บาท การสร้างยังไม่สมบูรณ์เพราะขาดทุนทรัพย์ ถึงวันที่ 23 เมษายน พ.ศ. 2506 เกิดพายุพัดอาคารเรียนเสียหายและก็ตกลงเลิกล้มการสร้างอาคาร นายธเนศวร์ ไชยวรกุล จึงได้เชิญผู้ปกครองมาประชุมเพื่อปรึกษาหาสถานที่สำหรับสร้างโรงเรียนต่อไปที่ประชุมมีความเห็นว่าควรซื้อที่ดินบริเวณที่ปัจจุบันนี้เพราะเหมาะสมกว่าที่อื่น และสามารถขยายต่อไปในอนาคตได้อีก ดังนั้นจึงได้ขอความร่วมมือจากนายเฮือน ชมภูชิต พ่อเลี้ยง (ผู้ใหญ่บ้าน) นายตั๋น แสนใจบาล และนายตุ่น สุวี ซื้อที่ดินเพื่อสร้างโรงเรียนจำนวน 38 ไร่ ปี พ.ศ. 2507 ทางโรงเรียนได้สร้างอาคารไม้ 2 ชั้น 4 ห้องเรียนโดยได้รับเงิน งบประมาณ 170,000 บาท ได้ย้ายมาทำการสอนในปัจจุบันเมื่อวันที่ 9 กันยายน พ.ศ. 2507 และ เข้าโครงการ ค.ม.ช. รุ่นที่ 4 ปีการศึกษา 2516 นายสุรศักดิ์ คำหอม ผู้ช่วยอาจารย์ใหญ่ทำการแทน นายธเนศวร์ ไชยวรกุล ซึ่งได้ศึกษาต่อ และปีเดียวกันทางโรงเรียนได้รับอนุญาตแต่งตั้งให้นายองอาจ วิทยาเวทวีวัฒน์ เป็นผู้ช่วยอาจารย์ใหญ่แทนนายสุรศักดิ์ คำหอม เนื่องจากนายสุรศักดิ์ คำหอม ได้รับแต่งตั้งให้ไปดำรงตำแหน่งครูใหญ่ โรงเรียนดอยสะเก็ดวิทยาคม
