ตามหลักสูตรแกนกลางการศึกษาขั้นพื้นฐาน พุทธศักราช 2551 ปรับปรุง 2555 ได้กำหนดเป้าหมาย (Goals) กลุ่มสาระการเรียนรู้ภาษาต่างประเทศโดย มุ่งหวังให้ผู้เรียนเป็นคนดี มีปัญญา มีความสุข มีเจตคติที่ดีต่อภาษาต่างประเทศ สามารถใช้ภาษาต่างประเทศ สื่อสารในสถานการณ์ต่างๆ แสวงหาความรู้ ประกอบอาชีพ และศึกษาต่อในระดับที่สูงขึ้น รวมทั้งมีความรู้ความเข้าใจในเรื่องราวและวัฒนธรรมอันหลากหลายของประชาคมโลก และสามารถถ่ายทอดความคิดและวัฒนธรรมไทยไปยังสังคมโลกได้อย่างสร้างสรรค์จึงกำหนดเป็นเปาหมายเพื่อให้เกิดกับผู้เรียน เมื่อจบการศึกษาขั้นพื้นฐาน ประกอบด้วยสาระที่สำคัญ ดังนี้
