ประวัติความเป็นมา
เริ่มจากหลวงปู่แว่น ธนปาโล ได้อยู่พักจำพรรษาที่วัดป่าสำราญนิวาส ตั้งแต่ปี พ.ศ. 2490 และได้นิมิตฝันบ่อยครั้งว่า ได้ไปเที่ยวจนถึงดอยแห่งหนึ่งที่กลางป่า หนทางที่ไปก็ต้องข้ามน้ำไปแล้วเดินขึ้นดอยไป พอถึงดอยก็ได้พบว่ามีถ้ำอยู่หลายแห่ง ทั้งถ้ำเล็กและถ้ำใหญ่ ดอยแห่งนี้ท่านได้ไปเห็นในนิมิตอยู่หลายครั้ง บางคืนฝันว่า ได้เหาะลอยไปจนถึงดอยนั้น โดยห่มผ้าจีวรติดตัวไปหลายผืน พอไปถึงดอยนั้นและได้ลงเดินยังพื้นดิน ก็ได้มีพระเณรหลายองค์มาขอเปลื้องสบงจีวรและสังฆาฏิจากตัวท่านไปจนหมด ทั้งในบริเวณนั้นยังมีหนุ่มสาวพากันเดินไปเป็นหมู่ๆ ท่านก็ได้แต่สงสัยในนิมิตนั้นว่า คงจะมีความหมายอะไรสักอย่าง
คืนวันหนึ่งขณะที่หลวงปู่สิมและหลวงปู่แว่นพากันนั่นสมาธิปฏิบัติธรรมตามปกติ ทั้งสององค์ก็ได้พบกับดวงจิตวิญญาณของเจ้าแม่ทิพย์วรรณ ณ เชียงตุง (ซึ่งเป็นโยมอุปัฏฐากที่เชียงใหม่แต่ได้สิ้นบุญไปก่อนหน้านั้นเล็กน้อย) ได้มายืนร้องเรียกขออาราธนาอยู่ตรงลานหน้าพระเจดีย์ในเขตวัดหลวงว่า “ดิฉันต้องการพระที่นุ่งผ้าดำนะ พระที่นุ่งผ้าเหลืองไม่เอา ขอให้ไปโปรดที่ถ้ำแกเก๊าด้วย” ตามความหมายก็คือ วิญญาณเจ้าแม่ต้องการนิมนต์พระกรรมฐานไปโปรดพวกเขาที่ถ้ำแกเก๊าหรือถ้ำพระสบายในปัจจุบัน แต่ไม่ต้องการพระมหานิกายซึ่งนุ่งห่มผ้าสีเหลือง (ตอนนั้นหลวงปู่แว่นท่านนุ่งห่มผ้าสีรักแก่ออกดำ)

หลวงปู่แว่นได้ปรารภกับชาวบ้านถึงเรื่องถ้ำต่างๆบนดอยแถวนี้ ซึ่งก็ได้ทราบว่านอกจากจะมีถ้ำแกเก๊าอันป็นถ้ำใหญ่แล้วก็ยังมีถ้ำใหญ่น้อยอื่นๆอีกหลายถ้ำ จึงได้ขอให้ชาวบ้านที่รู้จักทางพาไปดูในคืนต่อ ๆ มาก็ได้ก็เปลี่ยนมาพักที่ถ้ำแกเก๊าเป็นส่วนใหญ่ จนได้ติดป้ายชื่อที่หน้าถ้ำว่า “ถ้ำสบาย” ระหว่างที่กำลังปรับปรุงถ้ำแห่งนี้ หลวงปู่แว่นก็ต้องกลับไปดูแลวัดป่าสำราญนิวาส จึงต้องเดินทางไปๆมาๆ ระหว่างสถานที่ทั้งสองอยู่บ่อยๆ หนทางไปมาก็ยังไม่สะดวกต้องเดินทางด้วยเท้าเป็นระยะทางกว่ายี่สิบกิโลเมตรในครั้งนั้นพระหลวง กตปุญโญ ก็ได้ไปช่วยปรับปรุงสร้างที่พักสงฆ์ด้วย ได้อยู่ช่วยงานอย่างเต็มกำลัง
ต่อมาวันที่ 15 ธันวาคม 2491 หลวงปู่สิม พุทธาจาโร ได้เดินทางจากวัดสันติธรรมเพื่อเดินทางมาเยี่ยมหลวงปู่แว่นที่ถ้ำพระสบาย พอเจอหน้ากันหลวงปู่สิมก็ยิ้มและทักขึ้นว่า “ยังไงปักธงหลอกใครล่ะ” พูดพลางหันไปมองป้ายชื่อถ้ำแล้วหัวเราะ จากนั้นก็หันมาถามหลวงปูแว่นว่า “ที่ว่าสบายน่ะ ใครสบาย” หลวงปู่แว่นท่านก็หัวเราะอย่างรู้ทีแล้วตอบไปว่า “ก็พระนะซิที่สบาย” หลวงปู่สิมท่านก็ว่า “พระสบายก็บอกว่าพระสบายสิ” จากนั้นเองหลวงปู่แว่นท่านจึงได้เปลี่ยนชื่อถ้ำเสียใหม่ว่า “ถ้ำพระสบาย” ตั้งแต่นั้นมา
