1 ประวัติความเป็นมาของไทยกะเหรี่ยง
กะเหรี่ยงเป็นชาวเขาเผ่าแรกที่อพยพเข้าสู่ประเทศไทย และมีจำนวนมากที่สุดในกลุ่มชาวเขาด้วยกัน อาศัยอยู่ในจังหวัดต่างๆ รวม 16 จังหวัด
คือ เชียงราย เชียงใหม่ แม่ฮ่องสอน ลำปาง ลำพูน แพร่ สุโขทัย ตาก กำแพงเพชร อุทัยธานี สุพรรณบุรี กาญจนบุรี ราชบุรี เพชรบุรี ประจวบคีรีขันธ์ และระนอง
ชาวกะเหรี่ยงแบ่งออกเป็น 4 กลุ่มใหญ่ ตามลักษณะภาษา วัฒนธรรม และวิถีชีวิตความเป็นอยู่ ดังนี้

1.กะเหรี่ยงสะกอว์ หรือ ปกาเกอะญอ
ชาวไทยภาคเหนือ เรียกว่า ยางขาว ยางดอย ยางกะเลอ
ส่วนชาวไทยภาคกลาง เรียกว่า กะหร่าง
อยู่อาศัยบนภูเขา พบมากบริเวณภาคเหนือของไทย
2.กะเหรี่ยงโปว์ หรือ ปโว
เรียกตนเองว่า โผล่ว, โพล่ง, โพล่วง
ชาวไทย เรียกว่า ยางเปียง หรือ ยางน้ำ
ชาวพม่า เรียกว่า กะเหรี่ยงตะเลง
อาศัยอยู่ตามที่ราบ เป็นชาวกะเหรี่ยงที่อาศัยอยู่ในภูมิภาคตะวันตก โดยเฉพาะชาวกะเหรี่ยงอำเภอสวนผึ้ง และอำเภอบ้านคา จังหวัดราชบุรี
3.กะเหรี่ยงบะแว หรือ เบว
คนไทยภาคเหนือ เรียกว่ายางแดง
ส่วนมากอาศัยอยู่ในรัฐคะยาหรือรัฐกะเร็นนี ประเทศพม่า
ส่วนในประเทศไทยพบที่จังหวัด ตาก แม่ฮ่องสอน และเชียงใหม่
4.กะเหรี่ยงตองตู
คนไทยเรียกว่า ตองสู
ส่วนพม่านิยม เรียกว่า ปะโอ
อาศัยอยู่ในพม่าเป็นส่วนมาก และมีอยู่เล็กน้อยในประเทศไทยที่จังหวัดแม่ฮ่องสอน
