ประเพณีแข่งเรือ จังหวัดน่านนั้นมีมานานตั้งแต่อดีต จัดให้มีขึ้นในงานตานก๋วยสลาก (ถวายสลากภัต) ของแต่ละวัด ในหมู่บ้าน เมื่อประสงค์ให้มีการแข่งขันเรือด้วย ก็จะมีใบฎีกาบอกบุญและเชิญไปยังคณะศรัทธาต่างๆ ที่อยู่ต่างหมู่บ้านตำบลออกไปที่มีเรือแข่งก็ขอให้นำเรือเข้าร่วมแข่งขัน เพื่อเชื่อมความสามัคคี งานแข่งขันก็มักจัดในลุ่มน้ำน่าน อันถือเป็นหัวใจของการเกษตรกรรม และคมนาคมของจังหวัด ประมาณปี 2479 หลังจากมีการเปลี่ยนแปลงการปกครอง ตำแหน่งเจ้าผู้ครองนครน่านถูกยุบไป มีผู้ว่าราชการจังหวัด หรือข้าหลวงที่ถูกส่งไปจากส่วนกลางเข้าไปปกครองแทน ครั้งนั้นพระยาเกษตรสรรพกิจผู้ว่าราชการจังหวัด ดำริให้มีงานทอดกฐินสามัคคีขึ้นในจังหวัด และคงเห็นว่างานประเพณีแข่งเรือที่มีอยู่เดิมนั้นเป็นประเพณีที่สำคัญต่อกันมานาน จึงจัดให้มีการแข่งเรือในเทศกาลกฐินสามัคคีด้วย และยังได้จัดให้มีการแข่งขันและมีการวางระเบียบกติกา มีรางวัลให้แก่ผู้ชนะเลิศ นับแต่นั้นมางานประเพณีน้ำจึงถือเป็นงานสำคัญของทางจังหวัด
