จังหวัดลำปาง ตั้งอยู่ภาคเหนือตอนบนของประเทศไทย ห่างจากกรุงเทพฯ ตามทางหลวงแผ่นดินสายพหลโยธิน ประมาณ 602 กม. ตามทางรถไฟประมาณ 625 กม. มีเนื้อที่ประมาณ 12,533.961 ตร.กม. หรือประมาณ 7,833,726 ไร่ มีพื้นที่ใหญ่เป็นอันดับ 5 ของภาคเหนือ รองจากเชียงใหม่ ตาก แม่ฮ่องสอน และเพชรบูรณ์ มีอาณาเขตติดต่อกับจังหวัดข้างเคียงถึง 7 จังหวัด ดังนี้

ทิศเหนือ ติดต่อกับ จังหวัดเชียงใหม่ เชียงราย และพะเยา
ทิศใต้ ติดต่อกับ จังหวัดตาก
ทิศตะวันออก ติดต่อกับจังหวัดแพร่ และสุโขทัย
