2.  Active remote sensing เป็นระบบที่แหล่งพลังงานเกิดจากการสร้างขึ้นในตัวของเครื่องมือสำรวจ เช่น ช่วงคลื่นไมโครเวฟที่สร้างในระบบเรดาห์ แล้วส่งพลังงานนั้นไปยังพื้นที่เป้าหมาย ระบบนี้ สามารถทำการรับและบันทึกข้อมูล ได้โดยไม่มีข้อจำกัดด้านเวลา หรือ ด้านสภาวะภูมิอากาศ คือสามารถรับส่งสัญญาณได้ทั้งกลางวันและกลางคืน อีกทั้งยังสามารถทะลุผ่านกลุ่มเมฆ หมอก ฝนได้ในทุกฤดูกาล ในช่วงแรกระบบ passive remote sensing ได้รับการพัฒนามาก่อน และยังคงใช้กันอย่างแพร่หลายในปัจจุบัน ส่วนระบบ active remote sensing มีการพัฒนาจากวงการทหาร แล้วจึงเผยแพร่เทคโนโลยีนี้ต่อกิจการพลเรือนในช่วงหลังการสำรวจในด้านนี้ได้รับความสนใจมากขึ้นโดยเฉพาะกับประเทศในเขตร้อนที่มีปัญหาเมฆ หมอก ปกคลุมอยู่เป็นประจำ
