กีฬาซีเกมส์ South-East Asian Games หรือที่ย่อมาจาก SEA Games เป็นการแข่งขันกีฬากันระหว่างภูมิภาคเอเซียตะวันออกเฉียงใต้ ภายใต้การกำกับดูแลของคณะกรรมการโอลิมปิกสากลและ สภาโอลิมปิกแห่งเอเซีย ซึ่งเมื่อวันที่ 22 พฤษภาคม พ.ศ. 2501 (ค.ศ. 1958) องค์กรการกีฬา ของประเทศในเอเซียตะวันออกเฉียงใต้ ที่เข้าร่วมการแข่งขันกีฬาเอเซียนเกมส์ ครั้งที่ 3 ที่กรุงโตเกียวของ ประเทศญี่ปุ่น ได้จัดตั้งองค์กรการกีฬาในระดับภูมิภาคขึ้น โดยหลวงสุขุมนัยประดิษฐ์ เสนอว่าควรจัดการแข่งขันกีฬาในกลุ่มประเทศเอเซียตะวันออกเฉียงใต้ร่วมกัน เพื่อเป็นการกระชับความสัมพันธ์อันดีต่อเพื่อนบ้านประเทศร่วมกัน

ด้วยเหตุนี้เอง การแข่งขันกีฬาซีเกมส์ครั้งที่ 1 จึงได้ถือกำเนิดขึ้น โดยประกอบไปด้วยคณะกรรมการสมาชิกประเทศในภูมิภาคเอเซียตะวันออกเฉียงใต้ ได้แก่ ประเทศไทย, มาเลเซีย, เวียดนาม, ลาว, พม่า, เขมร, สิงค์โปร์ มาเป็นส่วนหนึ่งในการแข่งขันกีฬาแหลมทอง ซึ่งเป็นชื่อในการจัดแข่งขันซีเกมส์ครั้งที่ 1 ที่ กรุงเทพมหานครของไทย เมื่อวันที่ 12 – 17 ธันวาคม พ.ศ. 2502 (ค.ศ. 1959) แข่งขันกีฬา 12 ชนิด รวมทั้งสิ้น 527 คน

ต่อมาในการแข่งขันกีฬาซีเกมส์ครั้งที่ 2 กัมพูชา ได้เข้าร่วมการแข่งขันในปี พ.ศ. 2504 (ค.ศ. 1961) จากนั้นในปี พ.ศ. 2520 (ค.ศ. 1977) สมาพันธ์กีฬาได้ประกาศเปลี่ยนชื่อจาก สมาพันธ์กีฬาแห่งเอเซียตะวันออกเฉียงใต้ เป็นชื่อ กีฬาซีเกมส์ จนถึงปัจจุบัน พร้อมทั้งยังมีมติให้ ประเทศ อินโดนีเซีย, ฟิลิปปินส์, บรูไน เข้าร่วมเป็นสมาชิกและ กรรมการสมาพันธ์อย่างเป็นทางการ จึงได้สิทธิ์ร่วมการแข่งขันครั้งที่ 9 ที่จัดตั้งขึ้นที่ประเทศมาเลเซีย และสุดท้ายในปี พ.ศ. 2546 (ค.ศ. 2003) ได้มีประเทศ ติมอร์ตะวันออก มาเข้าร่วมการแข่งขันในกีฬาซีเกมส์ครั้งที่ 22 ที่กรุงฮานอย ของประเทศเวียดนามอีกด้วย

ล่าสุด พ.ศ. 2556 (ค.ศ. 2013) การแข่งขันซีเกมส์ ได้จัดตั้งขึ้นที่กรุงเนปยีดอ เมืองหลวงแห่งใหม่ของประเทศพม่า
