การศึกษาครั้งนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษาถึงผลกระทบของการประกาศจ่ายเงินปันผลที่มีต่อราคาหลักทรัพย์ในตลาดหลักทรัพย์แห่งประเทศไทย สำหรับเงินปันผลที่มีการประกาศจ่ายสำหรับรอบระยะเวลาบัญชี 6 เดือน ในช่วงเวลา ปี 2010-2012 เพื่อศึกษาว่าการประกาศจ่ายเงินปันผลที่เปลี่ยนแปลงไปจะมีผลต่อราคาหลักทรัพย์อย่างไร โดยการศึกษาครั้งนี้ใช้วิธีการศึกษาเหตุการณ์สำคัญเป็นวิธีในการศึกษาซึ่งกำหนดให้มีช่วงเกิดเหตุการณ์จำนวน 7วัน คือ 3 วันก่อนและหลังวันประกาศจ่ายเงินปันผล เพื่อใช้ทดสอบว่ามีผลตอบแทนที่เกินปกติในช่วงการประกาศจ่ายเงินปันผลหรือไม่ และในการศึกษาครั้งนี้ได้ปรับเอาหลักทรัพย์ที่มีการประกาศข่าวอื่นที่มีผลต่อราคาหลักทรัพย์ในช่วงที่เกิดเหตุการณ์ออก เพื่อให้ราคาหลักทรัพย์สะท้อนเฉพาะข่าวการประกาศเงินปันผลเพียงอย่างเดียว
