ปัจจุบันยางพาราเป็นพืชเศรษฐกิจที่สำคัญในภาคตะวันออกเฉียงเหนือ รองจากข้าว อ้อย และมันสําปะลัง เนื่องจากนโยบายการส่งเสริม และขยายพื้นที่ปลูกมายังภาคตะวันออกเฉียงเหนือในช่วง 15 ปีที่ผ่านมาประสบความสําเร็จอย่างสูง ทําให้มีพื้นที่ปลูกเพิ่มขึ้นอย่างต่อเนื่องทุกปีเพื่อให้มีข้อมูลเชิงพื้นที่ปลูกยางพาราที่เป็นปัจจุบัน และสามารถบูรณาการร่วมกับข้อมูลอื่นเพื่อช่วยสนับสนุนการวางแผนการใช้ที่ดินในการเพิ่มศักยภาพการผลิตได้อย่างมีประสิทธิภาพการศึกษาครั้งนี้จึงมีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อติดตามการขยายพื้นที่ปลูกยางพาราด้วยภาพถ่ายจากดาวเทียม พร้อมทั้งบูรณาการชั้นข้อมูลพื้นที่ปลูกยางพาราเพื่อตรวจสอบความเปลี่ยนแปลงการใช้ที่ดินจากการเพิ่มขึ้นของพื้นที่ปลูกยางพารา และตรวจสอบความสัมพันธ์ระหว่างพื้นที่ปลูกกับปริมาณน้ำฝนและภูมิสัณฐาน ในบริเวณจังหวัดมุกดาหาร ซึ่งมีเนื้อที่ประมาณ 2,700,000 ไร่ โดยในการติดตามการขยายพื้นที่ปลูกยางพาราได้ใช้ภาพถ่ายเชิงเลขหลายช่วงเวลา ได้แก่ ภาพถ่ายทางอากาศ(Orthophotography) ปีพ.ศ. 2545 ภาพถ่ายจากดาวเทียม SPOT ปีพ.ศ. 2549 และภาพถ่ายจากดาวเทียมไทยโชต (THAICHOTE) ปีพ.ศ. 2552-2554วิเคราะห์พื้นที่ปลูกยางพาราโดยตรงจากจอภาพด้วยสายตา ผลการศึกษาพบว่าพื้นที่ปลูกยางพาราในปี2545 2549 2552 2553 และ 2554 มีพื้นที่เท่ากับ24,259.48 49,157.48 121,324.48 178,510.36 และ 218,198.20 ไร่คิดเป็นร้อยละ 0.89 1.81 4.47 6.58 และ 8.04 ของพื้นที่ ตามลําดับ และพบว่าภาพถ่ายจากดาวเทียมไทยโชตระบบแพนโครมาติก ความละเอียดภาพ 2 เมตรมีประสิทธิภาพสูงในจําแนกพื้นที่ปลูกตามช่วงอายุได้จากระยะห่างระหว่างต้นและแถวเท่ากับ 3 * 6 เมตร หรือ 3 * 7 เมตร และการครอบคลุมของทรงพุ่มที่ปรากฏในภาพถ่ายจากดาวเทียม สามารถจําแนกช่วงอายุยางด้วยสายตาออกเป็น < 5 ปี, 5-10 และ > 10 ปีซึ่งมีความถูกต้องในระดับดีถึงดีมาก พื้นที่ปลูกยางพาราส่วนใหญ่สัมพันธ์กับเขตปริมาณนํ้าฝนเฉลี่ย 1,400-1,500 คิดเป็นร้อยละ 6.38 และปริมาณน้ำฝนเฉลี่ย 1,300-1,400 คิดเป็นร้อยละ 1.67 ของพื้นที่ทั้งหมด พื้นที่ปลูกส่วนใหญ่สัมพันธ์กับภูมิสัณฐานที่ราบขั้นบันไดระดับกลางคิดเป็นร้อยละ 5.38 ของจังหวัด รองลงมาเป็นพื้นที่ถูกกัดกร่อนบริเวณเชิงเขา พื้นที่ราบขั้นบันไดระดับสูง ที่ภูเขา คิดเป็นร้อยละ 1.26 0.70 และ 0.36 ของพื้นที่ทั้งหมด ตามลําดับ สําหรับการตรวจสอบความเปลี่ยนแปลงการใช้ที่ดินพบว่าพื้นที่ที่เป็นพืชไร่เปลี่ยนเป็นพื้นที่ปลูกยางพาราคิดเป็นร้อยละ 5.47 และพื้นทีป่าไม้ถูกบุกรุกเพื่อปลูกยางพาราร้อยละ 1.18 ของพื้นที่ทั้งหมด
