วัดพระเจ้าทองทิพย์ แต่เดิมเป็นวัดร้าง อยู่ในเขต บ้านป่าหวาย ซึ่งในอดีต เป็นป่าหวาย ทั้งหมู่บ้าน ชาวบ้าน จึงเรียกว่า บ้านป่าหวาย จนถึงปัจจุบันนี้ เมื่อประมาณ พ.ศ 2089 พระเจ้าไชยเชษฐาของกรุงศีรสันตนาคนหุตเมืองหลวง พระบาง(นครเชียงทอง)จะไปครองนครเชียงใหม่ ตามคำทูลของ เสนาอำมาตย์ ของเมืองเชียงใหม่พระองค์ได้นิมนต์พระเจ้าทองทิพย์ ซึ่งเป็นพระพุทธรูปที่เก่าแก่ลงเรือมาด้วย เพื่อจะนำไปสักการะบูชาที่นครเชียงใหม่ พระองค์จึงทรงประทับเรือ พระที่นั่งตามลำน้ำโขงเข้ามาแม่น้ำกกและแม่น้ำลาว ตามลำดับ ครั้นมาถึงหน้าวัดพระเจ้าทองทิพย์ ปัจจุบันเรือพระที่นั่งก็มาติด ทั้งๆที่ไม่สิ่งขีดขวางอะไรเลย เมื่อพระเจ้าไชยเชษฐา ทรงเห็นว่าเหล่าเสนาอำมาตย์หมดความสามารถแล้วจึงรับสั่งให้เสนาอำมาตย์ นิมนต์พระเจ้าทองทิพย์ ขึ้นทางทิศตะวันตกและโปรดให้สร้างมณฑปไว้เป็นที่ประดิษฐานพระเจ้าทองทิพย์ แล้วพระองค์ก็เสด็จไปครองนครเชียงใหม่ต่อไปและต่อมาชาวบ้านจึงเรียกชื่อวัดตามพระพุทธรูปว่า วัดพระเจ้าทองทิพย์สืบต่อกันมาจนถึงปัจจุบันนี้

วัดพระเจ้าทองทิพย์เริ่มสร้างเมื่อปี พ.ศ 2368 โดยท่านครูบาญาโณ พร้อมด้วย อุบาสก 3 คน คือ ท้าวสงคราม แสนขวาง และหมื่นขันธ์ ได้มา ริเริ่มสร้างประตูโขง พ.ศ 2397 ท่านครูบายะ ครูบาถา และครูบาพรหม ตลอดถึงเจ้าหลวงผู้ครองนครเชียงราย และพระยาไชยวงค์ ผู้รักษาเมืองหนองขวาง(อำเภอแม่สรวยปัจจุบัน)ร่วมกันสร้างพระวิหารพ.ศ 2461ท่านครูบาชัยวุฒิวริปัญญาได้รื้วิหารหลังเก่าบูรณะขึ้นใหม่ โดยได้รับทุนทรัพย์จากเจ้าดารารัศมี ผู้ครองนครเชียงใหม่จำนวน 200รูปีและบูรณะเสร็จในปีนั้นและได้บูรณะวิหารอีกครั้งพ.ศ 2539โดยพระอธิการประยุทธ ติกขวีโร พร้อมด้วยคณะศรัทธาได้ช่วยกันรื้อวิหารบูรณะใหม่เสร็จในปี พ.ศ 2541
