นาย ประยูร อุลุชาฎะ สนใจศิลปะตั้งแต่ยังเด็ก เมื่อสำเร็จการศึกษาในระดับมัธยมแล้ว ได้เข้าศึกษาที่โรงเรียนเพาะช่าง เมื่อ พ.ศ. 2486 รุ่นเดียวกับอังคาร กัลยาณพงศ์ ศิลปินแห่งชาติ และได้เข้าศึกษาต่อที่คณะจิตรกรรมและประติมากรรม มหาวิทยาลัยศิลปากรกับท่านศาสตราจารย์ศิลป์ พีระศรี และอาจารย์อื่นๆ เป็นเวลา 3 ปี ได้รับอนุปริญญาศิลปบัณฑิตด้านจิตรกรรมและประติมากรรม พ.ศ. 2492 หลังจากนั้นได้ศึกษาเพิ่มเติมในด้านจิตรกรรมกับท่านศาสตราจารย์ศิลป์อีก 2 ปี จนมีความรู้และความสามารถในทางทฤษฎีและปฏิบัติศิลปะเป็นอย่างดี สร้างสรรค์ผลงานด้านจิตรกรรมและงานวิชาการศิลปะเผยแพร่ต่อประชาชน หลังจากที่ได้ศึกษาวิชาศิลปะและวิชาช่างมาเป็นเวลา 8 ปี
