อุทยานแห่งชาติภูแลนคา ตั้งอยู่ในจังหวัดชัยภูมิ มีเนื้อที่โดยประมาณ 92,500 ไร่ เป็นสภาพพื้นที่ป่าอนุรักษ์ตามกฏหมาย และป่าอนุรักษ์ตามมติคณะรัฐมนตรี เมื่อวันที่ 10 และ 17 มีนาคม พ.ศ.2535 และที่สำคัญเป็นพื้นที่ป่าต้นน้ำลำธาร ป่าสมบูรณ์ ป่าฟื้นฟูทรัพยากรธรรมชาติ ป่าที่เป็นแหล่งที่อยู่อาศัยของสัตว์ป่า รวมทั้งเป็นป่าที่คณะกรรมการอุทยานแห่งชาติ คณะอนุกรรมการป้องกันและปราบปรามการลักลอบทำลายทรัพยากรป่าไม้ประจำจังหวัด ชมรมอนุรักษ์สิ่งแวดล้อมจังหวัด องค์กรสิ่งแวดล้อม ภาคตะวันออกเฉียงเหนือ องค์การบริหารส่วนตำบลทุกตำบลที่เกี่ยวข้อง ให้การเห็นชอบและสนับสนุนให้จัดตั้งเป็นอุทยานแห่งชาติภูแลนคา โดยอย่างยิ่งพื้นที่ป่าอนุรักษ์อุทยานแห่งชาติเป็นส่วนหนึ่งของต้นน้ำและลำห้วยต่างๆ ที่ไหลรวมกันเป็นลุ่มน้ำและไหลกันเป็นแม่น้ำชี เดิมเป็นป่าสงวนแห่งชาติ ป่าภูแลนคาด้านทิศเหนือและป่าภูแลนคาด้านทิศใต้
