ปัญหาด้านสังคมของประเทศญี่ปุ่นในปัจจุบัน มีประเด็นดังต่อไปนี้โดยภาพรวมประเทศญี่ปุ่นหลังจากประสบภัยครั้งใหญ่จากสึนามิใน ปี ค.ศ. 2011 ทำให้สังคมอ่อนแอลง ประชาชนทุกภาคส่วนเริ่มตระหนักถึงความสำคัญของการอนุรักษ์ทรัพยากรธรรมชาติและสิ่งแวดล้อมอย่างจริงจัง และเห็นว่าสังคมของญี่ปุ่นที่คิดว่ามีความมั่นคงและยั่งยืนตลอดมานั้น ยังไม่เป็นจริงตามนั้น ทุกภาคส่วนจำเป็นต้องมีส่วนร่วมในการรักษาทรัพยากรธรรมชาติและสิ่งแวดล้อม สรุปโดยภาพรวมของปัญหาสังคมของประเทศญี่ปุ่นในปัจจุบัน มีดังนี้
- มีการลดลงของจำนวนประชากรในหลายเมือง ยกเว้นกรณีของเมืองใหญ่ เช่น โตเกียว นาโกยา โอซาก้า ที่มีจำนวนประชากรหนาแน่นขึ้น
- จำนวนประชากรผู้สูงอายุมีสัดส่วนมากขึ้น ทำให้รัฐบาลจำเป็นต้องจัดหางบประมาณมาสร้างสาธารณูปโภคสำหรับผู้สูงอายุ
- ปัญหาด้านการผลิตอาหารและพลังงานในประเทศยังพึ่งตนเองไม่ได้ จำเป็นต้องอาศัยการนำเข้าอาหารและพลังงานจากต่างประเทศ สัดส่วนการพึ่งพาตนเองด้านพลังงานของประเทศยังอยู่ในเกณฑ์ต่ำมาก โดยมีศักยภาพประมาณ 6%

สำหรับแนวทางการพัฒนาสังคมที่ยั่งยืนนั้น ทางผู้เชี่ยวชาญของประเทศญี่ปุ่นได้ให้ข้อคิดว่าจะต้องคำนึงถึงสิ่งแวดล้อมและสังคม ส่งเสริมการหมุนเวียนการใช้ทรัพยากรและการมีส่วนร่วมของประชาชน ช่วยลดการทำลายทรัพยากรและสิ่งแวดล้อม รวมทั้งลดปัญหาการปล่อยก๊าซเรือนกระจกที่เป็นสาเหตุของปัญหาโลกร้อนอีกด้วย
