เมื่อ พ.ศ. 2310ได้มีการตั้งวัดทองทั่ว และเมื่อ พ.ศ. 2318 ได้รับพระราชทาน วิสุงคามสีมา เพื่อรับรองว่าวัดทองทั่ว เป็นวัดสมบูรณ์ตามพระราชบัญญัติลักษณะปกครองคณะสงฆ์ ร.ศ.121 โดยกรมศาสนา

ปัจจุบันวัดทองทั่วอยู่ใกล้โบราณสถานเมืองเพนียด ซึ่งมีความสัมพันธ์กับอารยธรรมขอมโบราณ โดยมีหลักฐาน จากโบราณวัตถุที่ค้นพบ และมี "วัดเพนียด" ซึ่งเป็นวัดเก่าแก่อยู่ห่างจากวัดทองทั่วทางทิศใต้ไปประมาณ 400 เมตร ต่อมาได้ย้ายที่ตั้งใหม่ คือวัดทองทั่วในปัจจุบัน วัดทองทั่วตั้งอยู่ในเขตเทศบาลตำบลพลับพลานารายณ์ ตำบลคลองนารายณ์ อำเภอเมือง จังหวัดจันทบุรีและห่างจากตัวจังหวัดไปทางทิศตะวันออกไปประมาณ 4-5 กิโลเมตร

ในสมัยกรุงศรีอยุธยาหลังเสียกรุงครั้งที่สอง สมเด็จพระเจ้าตากสินมหาราช ได้มารวบรวมกำลังไพร่พลเพื่อกู้อิสรภาพที่เมืองจันทบุรี เมื่อทรงกู้อิสรภาพได้สำเร็จ ก็คงจะมีความผูกพันกับวัดทองทั่ว พระราชทานวิสุงคามสีมาแก่วัดทองทั่ว และอาจจะสถาปนาวัดทองทั่วขึ้นเป็นพระอารามหลวง เพราะวัดทองทั่วมีใบสีมารอบพระอุโบสถหลังเก่าของวัดทั้ง 8 ทิศเป็นใบสีมาคู่ ซึ่งมีแต่พระอารามหลวงเท่านั้นจึงจะตั้งใบสีมาคู่ได้ และหลักฐานอีกชิ้นที่ได้ระบุความเป็นมาของวัดทองทั่ว คือเอกสารที่เก็บไว้ในหอจดหมายเหตุแห่งชาติเป็นเอกสารในรัชกาลที่ 5 ศ.12/25 รายงานถึงมณฑลจันทบุรี ร.ศ. 118 (พ.ศ. 2443) โดยพระสุคุณคณาภรณ์ (ม.ร.ว.ชื่น นพวงศ์) ซึ่งต่อมาได้เป็นพระวชิรญาณวงศ์ ดำรงตำแหน่งเป็น สมเด็จพระสังฆราชเจ้าที่พระจุลจอมเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัว (รัชกาลที่ 5 ) โปรดเกล้าให้มาจัดการศึกษาในเมืองจันทบุรี เมื่อร.ศ. 116 (พ.ศ. 2441) ซึ่งขณะนั้นอยู่ในตำแหน่งผู้อำนวยการการศึกษามณฑลจันทบุรี
