ประเทศปากีสถานมีชื่ออย่างเป็นทางการว่าสาธารณรัฐอิสลามปากีสถาน ซึ่งตั่งอยู่ทางเอเชียใต้  ด้านทิศตะวันตกมีพรมแดนติดกับประเทศอัฟกานิสถาน และ ประเทศอิหร่าน  ทางทิศตะวันออกติดกับประเทศอินเดีย  และด้านตะวันออกเฉียงเหนือติดกับประเทศจีน

ประเทศปากีสถานเป็นประเทศที่มีประชากรมากที่สุดเป็นอันดับหกของโลก  และเป็นประเทศอันดับสองของประเทศที่มีประชากรมุสลิมมากที่สุดในโลกรองจากประเทศอินโดนีเซีย

ดินแดนส่วนนี้หลังจากได้รับเอกราชจากการเป็นอาณานิคมอังกฤษในนามของประเทศอินเดีย ในวันที่ 29 ธันวาคม 1930 อิกบาลได้เรียกร้องให้เกิดรัฐอิสระในทางตะวันตกเฉียงเหนือของอินเดียให้กับชาวมุสลิมอินเดีย โดยที่ยังอยู่ภายใต้การปกครองของอินเดีย (ดูเพิ่มเติมใน Sir Muhammad Iqbal’s 1930 Presidential Address) และเขาได้รับการขนานนามว่า  the Thinker of Pakistan

การแยกตัวจากอินเดียในครั้งนี้สร้างความวุ่นวายอย่างมากทั้งในอินเดียและปากีสถาน  ชาวฮินดูและซิกห์นับล้านได้อพยพเข้าสู่อินเดีย  ในทางกลับกันชาวมุสลิมนับล้านเช่นกันจากที่ต่างๆหลั่งไหลเข้าสู่ปากีสถาน  และในช่วงนี้เองที่ได้เกิดเรื่องราวแห่งดินแดนที่สร้างความขัดแย้งให้กับอินเดียและปากีสถาน นั้นคือดินแดนแคชมีร์ ในช่วงเวลานั้นผู้ปกครองจามู แคชมีร์ได้ลงนามกับอินเดีย ต่อมเกิดสงครามแคชมีร์ครั้งแรกโดยการเข้าโจมตีจากนักรบปัชตุน  เมื่อสินสุดสงครามอินเดียได้ปกครองพื้นที่ถึงสองในสามของรัฐแห่งนี้โดยประมาณ

ต่อมา  Zulfikir Ali Bhutto บิดาของนาง Benazir Bhutto ได้เป็นผู้นำสามัญชนคนต่อมาของปากีสถาน (1972-1977) จนถูกถอดถอนและต่อมาถูกภิพากษาประหารชีวิติในข้อหาฆาตรกรรมในปี 1979 โดย นายพล Zia-ul-Haq
