หม่อมราชวงศ์คึกฤทธิ์ ปราโมช เกิดวันที่ 20 เมษายน พ.ศ. 2454 ในเรือกลางแม่น้ำเจ้าพระยา ณ ตำบลบ้านม้า อำเภออินทร์บุรี จังหวัดสิงห์บุรี เป็นโอรสคนสุดท้อง ในบรรดาโอรส-ธิดา ทั้ง 6 คน ของพระวรวงศ์เธอ พระองค์เจ้าคำรบ กับหม่อมแดง (บุนนาค) โดยชื่อ "คึกฤทธิ์" นั้น มาจากการที่ ชอบร้องไห้เสียงดังในวัยทารก จึงได้รับพระราชทานนามนี้จาก สมเด็จพระศรีพัชรินทรา บรมราชินีนาถ
