อนุสาวรีย์สุนทรภู่ มีอาณาบริเวณ 8.5 ไร่ เริ่มวางศิลาฤกษ์ตั้งแต่วันที่ 30 ธันวาคม พ.ศ. 2498 โดย จอมพล ป. พิบูลสงคราม นายกรัฐมนตรีในยุคนั้น แต่งานก่อสร้างค้างเติ่งไปเป็นเวลาร่วมสิบปี จนถึงปี พ.ศ. 2511 ผู้ว่าราชการจังหวัดระยองในยุคนั้นคือ นายวิทยา เกษรเสาวภาค เปิดรับบริจาคเงินทั่วประเทศได้เป็นจำนวน 962,776.10 บาท งานก่อสร้างจึงได้ดำเนินต่อ มีพิธีเททองที่รูปหล่อที่กรมศิลปากรเมื่อวันที่ 2 มีนาคม พ.ศ. 2512 และนำไปติดตั้งจนเสร็จเรียบร้อยเมื่อวันที่ 5 มีนาคม พ.ศ. 2513 มีพิธีเปิดอนุสาวรีย์อย่างเป็นทางการเมื่อวันที่ 25 พฤษภาคม พ.ศ. 2513
