เมื่อนายทหารทั้ง 3 นาย จบการศึกษา พระบาทสมเด็จพระมงกุฎเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัว (รัชกาลที่ 6) ทรงให้จัดซื้อเครื่องบินบรรทุกเรือกลับมาประเทศไทย จำนวน 8 ลำ เป็นเครื่องบินที่ทางราชการซื้อ 7 ลำ และเจ้าพระยาอภัยภูเบศร์ (ชุ่ม อภัยวงศ์) ซื้อให้ทางราชการ 1 ลำ หลังจากนั้นได้มีการก่อตั้งแผนกการบินทหารโดยใช้สนามราชกรีฑาสโมสรเป็นสนามบิน และสร้างโรงเก็บเครื่องบินขึ้นในบริเวณนั้น และในปี พ.ศ. 2457 กระทรวงกลาโหมได้ดำเนินการก่อสร้างสนามบินดอนเมืองแล้วเสร็จ เพื่อเป็นสนามบินที่ใช้ในกิจการทหาร และได้เลื่อนฐานะแผนกการบินทหารยกขึ้นเป็นกรม และได้เคลื่อนย้ายจากสนามราชกรีฑาสโมสรไปสู่ที่ตั้งใหม่ที่ดอนเมืองจนถึงปี พ.ศ. 2491 ท่าอากาศยานดอนเมืองได้เข้ามาอยู่ในการควบคุมดูแลของกรมการบินพลเรือน กองทัพอากาศ (และในปี พ.ศ. 2499 ได้เปลี่ยนชื่อท่าอากาศยานดอนเมืองเป็นท่าอากาศยานกรุงเทพ แต่ยังคงสังกัดกองทัพอากาศอยู่) ท่าอากาศยานดอนเมืองให้เป็นสนามบินหลักของประเทศ และได้รับการพัฒนาสร้างเสริมต่อเติมมาจนกระทั่งปัจจุบัน
