อุทยานแห่งชาติดอยอินทนนท์ เดิมเป็นส่วนหนึ่งของ "ป่าสงวนแห่งชาติดอยอินทนนท์" ต่อมาได้ถูกสำรวจและจัดตั้งเป็น 1 ใน 14 ป่า ที่ทางรัฐบาลให้ดำเนินการเป็นอุทยานแห่งชาติ คณะกรรมการอุทยานแห่งชาติ ได้ประกาศให้ดอยอินทนนท์เป็นอุทยานแห่งชาติลำดับที่ 6 ของประเทศไทย เมื่อ พ.ศ.2515
ดอยอินทนนท์ แต่เดิมมีชื่อว่า "ดอยหลวง" หรือ "ดอยอ่างกา" เนื่องจากขนาดของดอยที่ใหญ่มาก คำว่า หลวง เป็นภาษาเหนือ แปลว่า ใหญ่ ส่วนคำว่า อ่างกา มาจากภาษาปกาเกอญอ (กะเหรี่ยง) แปลว่า ใหญ่ เช่นกัน
