ประวัติความเป็นมา
อาคารหินอ่อนศิลปะสถาปัตยกรรมแบบตะวันตกหลังนี้ เริ่มก่อสร้างในสมัยรัชกาลที่ 5 เมื่อปี พ.ศ.2450 ด้วยทรงมีพระราชประสงค์ที่จะสร้างขึ้นเพื่อเป็นที่รับรองแขกเมือง และใช้สำหรับประชุมปรึกษาราชการแผ่นดิน ภายหลังจากที่สร้างพระที่นั่งอัมพรสถานในเขตพระราชวังดุสิตเสร็จแล้วในปี พ.ศ.2449 โดยทรงโปรดเกล้าฯ ให้เจ้าพระยายมราช (ปั้น สุขุม) เป็นแม่กองจัดการก่อสร้าง ให้นาย มาริโอ ตามาโย สถาปนิกชาวอิตาลีเป็นนายช่างออกแบบ ให้ศาสตราจารย์ แกลิเลโอ คินี และ นาย ซี. ริกุลี เป็นช่างเขียนภาพ

การก่อสร้างพระที่นั่งอนันตสมาคม ได้ดำเนินการจนสำเร็จบริบูรณ์ในสมัยรัชกาลที่ 6 เมื่อปี พ.ศ.2458 รวมใช้เวลาในการก่อสร้างทั้งสิ้น 8 ปี งบประมาณค่าก่อสร้างตามราคาในสมัยนั้นคิดเป็นเงิน 15 ล้านบาท
