กรมฯได้สำรวจและออกแบบรายละเอียดโครงการแล้วเสร็จมาตั้งแต่แต่ปี 2552 ซึ่งคณะกรรมการสิ่งแวดล้อมแห่งชาติ ให้ความเห็นชอบรายงานผลกระทบสิ่งแวดล้อมช่วงบางใหญ่-บ้านโป่ง ตั้งแต่ปี 2541 ส่วนช่วงบ้านโป่ง-กาญจนบุรี ได้รับความเห็นชอบเมื่อปี 2546 ปัจจุบันอยู่ระหว่างศึกษาแนวทางและรูปแบบการลงทุนรูปแบบ Public Private Partnership หรือ PPPs โดยให้เอกชนร่วมลงทุน ได้รับการสนับสนุนด้านวิชาการศึกษาจากธนาคารพัฒนาเอเชีย หรือ เอดีบี คาดผลการศึกษาจะเสร็จปี 2555

ทั้งนี้เพื่อให้การเชื่อมต่อมอเตอร์เวย์สายบางใหญ่-นครปฐม-กาญจนบุรี สามารถเชื่อมต่อไปถึงชายแดนพม่าได้ จึงได้จ้างบริษัทศึกษาความเหมาะสมทางด้านเศรษฐกิจ วิศวกรรม และผลกระทบสิ่งแวดล้อมโครงการมอเตอร์เวย์สายกาญจนบุรี-ชายแดนไทย-พม่า ที่บ้านพุน้ำร้อน ระยะทาง 70 กม. คาดใช้เวลาศึกษา 1 ปี

สำหรับรูปแบบโครงการมอเตอร์เวย์บางใหญ่-นครปฐม-กาญจนบุรี จะก่อสร้างเป็นทางหลวงมาตรฐานสูง ควบคุมการเข้า-ออกอย่างสมบูรณ์ เก็บค่าผ่านทางตามระยะทางหรือระบบปิด การก่อสร้างแบ่งออกเป็น 2 ช่วง คือ ช่วงบางใหญ่-นครปฐม ขนาด 6 ช่องจราจร ระยะทาง 51 กม. ช่วงนครปฐม-กาญจนบุรี 4 ช่องจราจร ระยะทาง 47 กม. คาดใช้เวลาก่อสร้างประมาณ 3 ปี
