ท่านพุทธทาสให้นายธรรมทาส พานิช ผู้เป็นน้องชายและคณะธรรมทานสำรวจหาที่ทีมีความเหมาะสม คณะสำรวจจึงเลือกเช่าที่วัดร้างแห่งหนึ่งชื่อ “ วัดตระพังจิก “ อยู่ทางทิศตะวันตกเฉียงเหนือของหมู่บ้านพุมเรียง วัดนี้มีสภาพเป็นป่ารกทึบห่างไกลจากผู้คน จึงมีความเหมาะสมที่จะพำนักเพื่อศึกษาค้นคว้าธรรมะในพระไตรปิฏก และศึกษาค้นคว้าทางจิตใจ ท่านพุทธทาสได้ตั้งชื่อสถานที่แห่งนี้ว่า “ สวนโมกขพลาราม “ เพราะบริเวณนั้นมีต้นโมกและต้นพลาขึ้นอยู่มากขึ้นอยู่มาก ท่านพุทธทาสจึงนำคำว่าโมก พลา และอารามมารวมกันได้ชื่อสำนักปฏิบัติธรรม ที่มีความหมายตรงกับธรรมะว่า“อารามที่ทำให้เกิดกำลังแห่งงความหลุดพ้น “ ซึ่งในช่วงเวลา 2 ปี แรกท่านพุทธทาสพำนักอยู่เพียงลำพัง เพราะสวนโมกข์ยังไม่เป็นรู้จักและเข้าใจของคนทั่วไป
ต่อมาท่านพุทธทาสและคณะธรรมทานได้ออกหนังสือพิมพ์ “ พุทธศาสนา ” พิมพ์เผยแพร่จุดประสงค์ของการจัดตั้งสวนโมกขพลาราม ซึ่งมีเจตนารมณ์ที่ตั้งไว้ครั้งแรก 3 ข้อ คือ
1. การค้นคว้าพระไตรปิฎก (ปริยัติ)
2. การตามรอยพระอรหันต์ (ปฏิบัติ )
3. การเผยแพร่ความรู้ธรรมะชั้นลึก

และได้มีการตั้งปณิธานเพิ่มอีก 3 ข้อ คือ ให้ทุกคนเข้าถึงหัวใจของศาสนาของตนๆ ให้เกิดความเข้าใจกันระหว่างศาสนา และช่วยกันเข็นโลกให้ออกจากวัตถุนิยม รวมทั้งลงบทความเผยแพร่ความรู้ในพระไตรปิฎก ในแง่มุมต่างๆ และในฉบับปฐมฤกษ์นั้น ท่านพุทธทาสได้เขียนปฏิญาณตน ในบทความของท่านว่า ข้าพเจ้ามอบชีวิตและร่างกายนี้ ถวายแด่พระพุทธเจ้า ข้าพเจ้าเป็นทาสของพระพุทธเจ้า พระพุทธเจ้าเป็นนายของข้าพเจ้า เพราะเหตุดังว่ามานี้ ข้าพเจ้าจึงชื่อว่า พุทธทาส หลังจากนั้น ก็มีภิกษุสามเณร ที่เห็นด้วยเดินทางมาขอพำนัก ที่อยู่สวนโมกข์ ตำบลพุมเรียง เป็นเวลา 10 กว่าปี จึงได้ขยับขยายเพราะความจำเป็นในเรื่องต่างๆ มีมากขึ้น โดยเฉพาะเรื่องน้ำ และชาวบ้านเข้ามาอยู่อาศัยรอบๆมากขึ้น ซึ่งเป็นเหตุให้สวนโมกข์ที่ตำบลพุมเรียง ไม่เหมาะกับการเป็นสถานที่ปฏิบัติธรรมอีกต่อไป
