ความเป็นมา วันต่อต้านยาเสพติด
ประเทศไทยได้เผชิญกับปัญหา ยาเสพติด มา เป็นเวลาช้านาน รัฐบาลในแต่ละยุคได้ดำเนินการแก้ไขปัญหายาเสพติดมาตลอด จนกระทั่งใน พ.ศ. 2501 คณะปฏิวัติภายใต้การนำของจอมพล สฤษดิ์ ธนะรัชต์ ได้ออกประกาศคณะปฏิวัติฉบับที่ 37 ลงวันที่ 9 ธันวาคม 2501 ให้เลิกการสูบฝิ่นทั่วราชอาณาจักรโดยมีการเผาทำลายฝิ่นและอุปกรณ์การสูบฝิ่น ที่ท้องสนามหลวงในคืนวันที่ 30 มิถุนายน 2502 หลังจากนั้นปี พ.ศ. 2504 รัฐบาลได้จัดตั้ง คณะกรรมการปราบปรามยาเสพติดให้โทษ ใช้ชื่อย่อว่า ปปส. สังกัดสำนักนายกรัฐมนตรีโดยมีอธิบดีกรมตำรวจเป็นประธาน และมีผู้แทนจากทุกส่วนราชการที่เกี่ยวข้องเป็นกรรมการ
ต่อ มาในสมัยนายธานินทร์ กรัยวิเชียร เป็นนายกรัฐมนตรีรัฐบาลได้เล็งเห็นว่า การปราบปรามยาเสพติดไม่สามารถแก้ไขได้โดยการดำเนินการเฉพาะกรมตำรวจฝ่าย เดียว จึงได้เสนอร่างพระราชบัญญัติป้องกันและปราบปรามยาเสพติด พ.ศ. 2519 ต่อสภาปฏิรูปการปกครองแผ่นดิน และประกาศใช้เป็นกฎหมายเมื่อวันที่ 16 พฤศจิกายน 2519
ตั้งแต่ นั้นเป็นต้นมาการแก้ไขปัญหายาเสพติดของประเทศไทยก็ได้ดำเนินไปอย่างมีแบบแผน และเป็นระบบที่ดีขึ้น พระราชบัญญัติดังกล่าวได้กำหนดให้มีคณะกรรมการป้องกันและปราบปรามยาเสพติด หรือเรียกชื่อย่อว่า ป.ป.ส. โดยมีนายกรัฐมนตรีเป็นประธาน และจัดตั้งสำนักงาน ป.ป.ส. ขึ้นเป็นหน่วยงานกลางรับผิดชอบโดยตรง มีฐานะเป็นกรม กรมหนึ่งในสำนักนายกรัฐมนตรี ปัจจุบันสำนักกระทรวงยุติธรรม ขึ้นตรงต่อนายกรัฐมนตรี มีหน้าที่ประสานงานกับหน่วยงานที่เกี่ยวข้องกับการป้องกันและปราบปรามยาเสพ ติดทั้งในประเทศและต่างประเทศ
ผล จากปัญหายาเสพติด ได้ก่อให้เกิดความเสียหายร้ายแรงต่อมวลมนุษยชาติทั่วโลก เพื่อเน้นถึงความสำคัญของการต่อสู้กับปัญหาการใช้ยาในทางที่ผิด และการลักลอบค้ายาเสพติดและเพื่อส่งเสริมความร่วมมือระหว่างประเทศทั่วโลกใน การต่อสู้กับปัญหายาเสพติด ที่ประชุมระหว่างประเทศว่าด้วยการใช้ยาในทางที่ผิด และการลักลอบใช้ยาเสพติด (International Conference on Drug Abuse and llicit Trafficking I) ซึ่งจัดขึ้นที่กรุงเวียนนา ประเทศออสเตรีย ระหว่าง วันที่ 17-26 มิถุนายน 2530 ที่ประชุมได้เสนอเป็นข้อมติต่อสมัชชาใหญ่สหประชาชาติขอให้กำหนดวันที่ 26มิถุนายนของทุกปีเป็นวันต่อต้านยาเสพติดซึ่งที่ประชุมได้มีมติเห็นชอบตาม ข้อเสนอดังกล่าวในการประชุมเมื่อ วันที่ 7 ธันวาคม พ.ศ. 2530
ประเทศไทย? สำนักงาน ป.ป.ส.ใน ฐานะหน่วยงานกลางที่รับผิดชอบเกี่ยวกับการป้องกันและแก้ไขปัญหายาเสพติดใน ประเทศมาโดยตลอด ได้นำมติเรื่องวันต่อต้านยาเสพติดขององค์การสหประชาชาติเสนอต่อคณะรัฐมนตรี ในการประชุมเมื่อวันที่ 14 มิถุนายน 2531 ซึ่งที่ประชุมคณะรัฐมนตรีได้มีมติให้กำหนดวันที่ 26 มิถุนายน ของทุกปี เป็นวันต่อต้านยาเสพติดโดยเริ่มตั้งแต่ปี พ.ศ. 2531เป็นต้นมา
กิจกรรม วันต่อต้านยาเสพติด
สำนักงาน ป.ป.ส. ร่วมกับศูนย์อำนวยการต่อสู้เพื่อเอาชนะยาเสพติดแห่งชาติ และศูนย์ปฏิบัติการต่อสู้เพื่อเอาชนะยาเสพติดกรุงเทพมหานคร จะจัดกิจกรรมรณรงค์พิเศษ “มหกรรมภาคีพลังแผ่นดิน เอาชนะยาเสพติด” ขึ้นโดยระดมพลังครั้งยิ่งใหญ่จากทุกภาคส่วนของสังคม และประชาชนทุกหมู่เหล่าในเขตพื้นที่กรุงเทพมหานครและปริมณฑล ณ บริเวณลานคนเมือง ศาลาว่าการกรุงเทพมหานคร ในวันที่ 26 มิถุนายน 2547 ตั้งแต่เวลา 06.30 – 14.00 น. โดยมีนายกรัฐมนตรีเป็นประธานในพิธี พิธีในช่วงเช้าเริ่มด้วยการใส่บาตรข้าวสารอาหารแห้ง การกล่าวคำปฏิญาณตนและการแสดงเจตนารมณ์เป็น “พลังแผ่นดิน” ร่วมเฝ้าระวังปัญหายาเสพติด และการแสดงผลงานของภาคีพลังแผ่นดินที่จะร่วมต่อสู้เอาชนะยาเสพติดอย่างต่อเนื่องและเป็นไปอย่างยั่งยืน เช่นพลังเยาวชน พลังครอบครัว พลังชมรม To Be Number One พลังผู้ประสานพลังแผ่นดิน พลังลูกเสือชาวบ้าน พลังภาคเอกชนและธุรกิจเอกชน พลังชุมชน เป็นต้น
