วัดไชยวัฒนาราม มีปรางค์ประธานและปรางค์มุมอยู่บนฐานเดียวกัน พระปรางค์ประธานนำรูปแบบของพระปรางค์สมัยอยุธยาตอนต้นมาก่อสร้าง แต่ปรางค์ประธานที่วัดไชยวัฒนารามทำมุขทิศยื่นออกมามากกว่า บนยอดองค์พระปรางค์ใหญ่อาจเคยประดิษฐานพระเจดีย์ขนาดเล็ก สื่อถึงพระเจดีย์จุฬามณีบนยอดเขาพระสุเมรุ รอบพระปรางค์ใหญ่ล้อมรอบไปด้วยระเบียงคตที่เดิมนั้นมีหลังคา ภายในระเบียงคตประดิษฐานพระพุทธรูปปูนปั้นปางมารวิชัยที่เคยลงรักปิดทองจำนวน 120 องค์ เป็นเสมือนกำแพงเขตศักดิ์สิทธิ์ ตามแนวระเบียงคตตรงทิศทั้งแปดสร้างเมรุทิศ และ เมรุมุม (เจดีย์รอบๆพระปรางค์ใหญ่) ภายในเมรุทุกองค์ประดิษฐานพระพุทธรูป ภายในซุ้มเรือนแก้วล้วนลงรักปิดทอง ฝาเพดานทำด้วยไม้ประดับลวดลายลงรักปิดทองเช่นกัน

พระอุโบสถ สร้างอยู่ทางด้านหน้ากำแพงเมรุทิศเมรุราย นอกระเบียงคต ปัจจุบันเหลือแต่ฐาน ข้างๆมีเจดีย์ย่อมุมไม้สิบสอง มีกำแพงล้อมรอบโบราณสถานสำคัญแหล่านี้ถึง 3 ชั้น และ มีปรางค์เจดีย์ขนาดย่อมอีกจำนวนหนึ่งซึ่งสร้างเพิ่มในภายหลัง



เมรุทิศเมรุราย[แก้]

ปรางค์มุม
เมรุทิศเมรุราย ตั้งล้อมรอบพระปรางค์อยู่ทั้งสิ้น 8 องค์ โดยผนังภายในเมรุเขียนภาพจิตรกรรมฝาผนังรูปใบไม้ใบกนก ซึ่งลบเลือนไปมากแล้ว ผนังด้านนอกของเมรุมีภาพปูนปั้นพุทธประวัติ จำนวน 12 ภาพ ซึ่งในปัจจุบันเลือนไปแล้วเช่นกัน แต่เมื่อ 20 ปีที่แล้วยังสามารถเห็นได้ชัด

เมรุเป็นทรงปราสาท ซ้อนลดหลั่นกันขึ้นไป 7 ชั้น รองรับส่วนยอดที่ ชื่อที่มานั้นนำมาจากเมรุ พระบรมศพพระมหากษัตริย์สมัยพระนครศรีอยุธยา ซึ่งมีแนวความคิด มาจากคติเขาพระสุเมรุอีกต่อหนึ่ง
