ประเทศไทยได้เข้าสู่การเป็นสังคมผู้สูงอายุตั้งแต่ประมาณปี 2543-2544 กล่าวคือ มีประชากรอายุ 60 ปีขึ้นไปคิดเป็นสัดส่วนประมาณร้อยละ 10 ของจำนวนประชากรทั้งหมดในประเทศ โดยในปี 2555 มีผู้สูงอายุคิดเป็นประมาณร้อยละ 12.7 ของจำนวนประชากรทั้งประเทศ และคาดว่าสัดส่วนนี้จะมีแนวโน้มเพิ่มสูงขึ้นอย่างต่อเนื่อง ซึ่งอาจเพิ่มสูงถึงร้อยละ 20 ของประชากร ในช่วงเวลาอีก 15 ปีข้างหน้า หรือในปี2568 (สำนักงานสถิติแห่งชาติ ,2557) นอกจากนี้การที่มีประชากรผู้สูงอายุเพิ่มมากขึ้นนี้ ยังพบว่าผู้สูงอายุมีโรคเรื้อรังเพิ่มมากขึ้นจากการที่เทคโนโลยีด้านการแพทย์เจริญก้าวหน้ามาก ทำให้ผู้สูงอายุมีอายุยืนยาวขึ้น
