มูลนิธิการศึกษาและวัฒนธรรมสัมพันธ์ไทย – นานาชาติ (เอเอฟเอส ประเทศไทย) ได้ดำเนินการร่วมกับเอเอฟเอสโลก และประเทศสมาชิกจานวนกว่า 50 ประเทศ จัดโครงการเพื่อการเรียนรู้ด้านภาษาและ แลกเปลี่ยนวัฒนธรรมโดยมุ่งหวังในการสร้างความเข้าใจอันดีและการอยู่ร่วมกันอย่างมีความสุขระหว่างมวลมนุษยชาติ และเป็นการพัฒนาทักษะ ค่านิยมส่วนบุคคล ตลอดจนวัฒนธรรมและวิถีชีวิตความเป็นอยู่ของเยาวชน จนสามารถปรับตนเองให้อยู่ร่วมกับบุคคลอื่นที่มีความแตกต่างในหลายๆ ด้านได้อย่างมีความสุข ทั้งนี้ เยาวชนที่เป็นคนดีมีคุณสมบัติและความสามารถเหมาะสมตามเกณฑ์และมาตรฐาน AFS จะได้รับการคัดเลือกเป็นตัวแทนของเยาวชนไทยไปศึกษาและพำนักกับครอบครัวอุปถัมภ์ในต่างประเทศ ระยะเวลาประมาณ 1 ปีการศึกษา
