Swot analysis มาจากตัวย่อภาษาอังกฤษ 4 ตัว ได้แก่
S มาจาก Strengths หมายถึง จุดเด่นหรือจุดแข็ง ซึ่งเป็นผลมาจากปัจจัยภายใน เป็นข้อดีที่เกิดจากสภาพแวดล้อมภายในบริษัท
W มาจาก Weaknesses หมายถึง จุดด้อยหรือจุดอ่อน ซึ่งเป็นผลมาจากปัจจัยภายใน เป็นปัญหาหรือข้อบกพร่องที่เกิดจากสภาพแวดล้อมภายในต่างๆ ของบริษัท ซึ่งบริษัทจะต้องหาวิธีในการแก้ปัญหานั้น
O มาจาก Opportunities หมายถึง โอกาส ซึ่งเกิดจากปัจจัยภายนอก เป็นผลจากการที่สภาพแวดล้อมภายนอกของบริษัทเอื้อประโยชน์หรือส่งเสริมการดำเนินงานขององค์กร
T มาจาก Threats หมายถึง อุปสรรค ซึ่งเกิดจากปัจจัยภายนอก เป็นข้อจำกัดที่เกิดจากสภาพแวดล้อมภายนอก ซึ่งธุรกิจจำเป็นต้องปรับกลยุทธ์การตลาดให้สอดคล้องและพยายามขจัดอุปสรรคต่างๆ ที่เกิดขึ้น
