สถานภาพปัจจุบันไม่พบรายงานในธรรมชาติมานานเป็นระยะเวลากว่า 30 ปีแล้ว จนเชื่อได้ว่าอาจสูญพันธุ์ไปแล้วจากแหล่งธรรมชาติ เนื่องจากถูกล่าเป็นอาหารและสัตว์เลี้ยงอย่างมาก รวมทั้งถูกคุกคามในเรื่องที่อยู่อาศัยในธรรมชาติด้วย และเป็นสัตว์ป่าคุ้มครองตามพระราชบัญญัติสงวนและคุ้มครองสัตว์ป่า พุทธศักราช 2535 แต่ปัจจุบัน กรมประมงสามารถเพาะขยายพันธุ์ตะพาบม่านลายได้สำเร็จในที่เลี้ยงได้แล้วในปี พ.ศ. 2545 โดยให้ผสมพันธุ์ในน้ำและขึ้นมาวางไข่บนหาดทรายในฤดูหนาวช่วงเดือนธันวาคม-กุมภาพันธ์ ตะพาบม่านลายอัตราการเจริญเติบโตเทียบกับเต่าหรือตะพาบชนิดอื่นแล้ว นับว่ามีอัตราการเจริญเติบโตที่ช้ากว่ามาก[3]

และในต้นปี พ.ศ. 2553 แม่พันธุ์ตะพาบม่านลายของกรมประมงก็ได้วางไข่สูงสุดถึง 305 ฟอง ซึ่งนับว่ามากสุดเท่าที่เคยมีมา ใช้เวลาฟัก 61-70 วัน โดยฟักเป็นตัวทั้งหมด 92 ฟอง คิด เป็นอัตราการฟักประมาณ 30 เปอร์เซนต์ ซึ่งทางกรมประมงตั้งเป้าหมายจะเพาะขยายพันธุ์ให้มากขึ้นกว่านี้เพื่อจะได้ปล่อยลูกตะพาบลงสู่ธรรมชาติ เพื่อมิให้เกิดการสูญพันธุ์ [4]

นอกจากนี้แล้ว ตะพาบม่านลายยังมีชื่อเรียกอื่น ๆ อีกว่า "กริวลาย", "กราวด่าง", "ม่อมลาย", "มั่มลาย" เป็นต้น

โดยที่ตะพาบม่านลายชนิดนี้เดิมถูกจัดเป็นชนิดเดียวและใช้ชื่อวิทยาศาสตร์เดียวกับ ตะพาบม่านลายอินเดีย (C. indica) ซึ่งเป็นชนิดที่พบในอินเดียและปากีสถาน แต่ทว่าได้ถูกอนุกรมวิธานใหม่จาก น.อ.(พิเศษ) วิโรจน์ นุตพันธุ์ นักวิทยาศาสตร์ชาวไทย เมื่อปี พ.ศ. 2529 (ค.ศ. 1986) โดยแยกออกเป็นชนิดใหม่[5]
