พระราชกรณียกิจ พระบาทสมเด็จพระปรมินทรมหาภูมิพลอดุลยเดชมหาราช ด้านการศึกษา

พระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัว ทรงตระหนักดีว่า การพัฒนาการศึกษาของเยาวชนนั้น เป็นพื้นฐานอันสำคัญของประเทศชาติ จึงทรงพระกรุณาโปรดเกล้าฯ พระราชทานพระราชทรัพย์จัดตั้งมูลนิธิอานันทมหิดล ให้เป็นทุนสำหรับการศึกษาในแขนงวิชาต่าง ๆ เพื่อให้นักศึกษาได้มีทุนออกไปศึกษา หาความรู้ต่อในวิชาการชั้นสูงในประเทศต่าง ๆ โดยไม่มีเงื่อนไขข้อผูกพันแต่ประการใด เพื่อที่จะได้นำความรู้นั้น ๆ กลับมาใช้พัฒนาประเทศชาติให้เจริญก้าวหน้าต่อไป

H.M.K picture นอกเหนือไปจากนี้แล้ว ทรงมีพระราชดำริให้ดำเนินการจัดทำสารานุกรมไทยสำหรับเยาวชนขึ้น สารานุกรมชุดนี้ มีลักษณะพิเศษที่แตกต่างจากสารานุกรมชุดอื่น ๆ ที่ได้เคยจัดพิมพ์มาแล้ว กล่าวคือ เป็นสารานุกรมอเนกประสงค์ที่บรรจุเรื่องราวต่าง ๆ ที่เป็นสาระไว้ครบทุกแขนงวิชา โดยจัดแบ่งเนื้อหาของแต่ละเรื่องออกเป็นสามระดับ เพื่อที่จะให้เยาวชนแต่ละรุ่น ตลอดจนผู้ใหญ่ที่มีความสนใจ สามารถที่จะศึกษาค้นคว้าหาความรู้ ได้ตามความเหมาะสมของพื้นฐานความรู้ ของแต่ละคน โดยมีวิทยากรผู้ทรงคุณวุฒิในแต่ละสาขาวิชา การอุทิศเวลาและความรู้ เพื่อสนองพระราชดำริ โดยร่วมกันเขียนเรื่องต่าง ๆ ขึ้น แบ่งออกเป็น 4 สาขาวิชา คือ วิทยาศาสตร์ เทคโนโลยี สังคมศาสตร์และมนุษยศาสตร์

โรงเรียนร่มเกล้า ก็เป็นสถานศึกษาในระดับมัธยมศึกษา ในหลายจังหวัดที่เกิดขึ้นจากพระราชดำริ ที่จะให้ทหารออกไปปฏิบัติภารกิจในท้องที่ทุรกันดาร ได้ทำประโยชน์ต่อชุมชน และมีส่วนช่วยเหลือประชาชนในด้านการศึกษา ตามโอกาสอันควร โดยพระราชทานพระราชทรัพย์ส่วนพระองค์ ให้ทหารจัดสร้างโรงเรียนขึ้นในจังหวัดนครพนม จังหวัดสกลนคร จังหวัดนราธิวาส จังหวัดปราจีนบุรีและจังหวัดแม่ฮ่องสอน เป็นต้น เพื่อช่วยบรรเทาปัญหาการขาดแคลนสถานศึกษาสำหรับเยาวชน และยังเป็นการส่งเสริมความเข้าใจอันดี ระหว่างเจ้าหน้าที่ทหารที่ไปปฏิบัติภารกิจในพื้นที่นั้น ๆ กับราษฎรเจ้าของท้องที่อีกโสตหนึ่งด้วย ซึ่งในการดำเนินงานจัดสร้างโรงเรียน ทางฝ่ายทหารได้ติดต่อประสานงานกับเจ้าหน้าที่ฝ่ายปกครอง และฝ่ายศึกษาธิการ เพื่อเลือกสถานที่ตั้งโรงเรียนที่เหมาะสมกับความจำเป็นที่สุด ซึ่งปรากฎว่าราษฎรในท้องที่ที่มีการสร้างโรงเรียน ได้พากันร่วมอุทิศแรงกายช่วยในการก่อสร้าง ตลอดจนอุทิศทุนทรัพย์สมทบเป็นทุนในการจัดซื้ออุปกรณ์ต่าง ๆ ที่จะนำไปใช้ในการก่อสร้างโรงเรียน เพื่อเป็นการโดยเสด็จพระราชกุศลด้วย และเมื่อการก่อสร้างโรงเรียนแล้วเสร็จ พระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัว ได้เสด็จพระราชดำเนินไปทรงเปิดโรงเรียนเหล่านั้น พร้อมทั้งพระราชทานนามว่า โรงเรียนร่มเกล้า ซึ่งในปัจจุบันมีทั้งโรงเรียนระดับประถมศึกษา และระดับมัธยมศึกษา
