ประวัติ / ความเป็นมา
ประเพณีอุ้มพระดำน้ำ เป็นประเพณีของชาวเพชรบูรณ์ที่มีความเชื่อถือศรัทธาต่อพระพุทธรูปศักดิ์สิทธิ์คู่บ้านคู่เมือง คือ พระพุทธมหาธรรมราชา ปัจจุบันประดิษฐานอยู่ที่วัดไตรภูมิ มูลเหตุที่มีประเพณีอุ้มพระดำน้ำทุกปีนั้น ตำนานเล่าสืบกันมาว่าย้อนหลังไปประมาณ 400 ปี ชาวประมงกลุ่มหนึ่งออกหาปลาบริเวณลำน้ำป่าสัก ซึ่งสมัยนั้นมีปลาชุกชุมมาก วันหนึ่งเกิดเหตุการณ์ประหลาด ตังแต่เช้าจรดบ่ายยังไม่มีใครจับปลาได้สักตัว คล้ายกับว่าใต้พื้นน้ำแห่งนี้ไม่มีสิ่งมีชีวิตอาศัยอยู่เลย สร้างความงุนงงแก่ชาวประมงเป็นอย่างมาก ทันใดนั้นกระแสน้ำนั้นก็หยุดไหล นิ่งอยู่กับที่ และค่อยมีพรายน้ำผุดขึ้นทีละฟองสองฟอง แล้วทวีมากขึ้น ไม่ต่างกับน้ำในกาถูกต้มกำลังเดือด ไม่นานก็เปลี่ยนเป็นวังวงใหญ่ และลึกมาก ทุกคนต่างมองดูด้วยความงุนงงไม่สามารถหาคำตอบได้ว่า มันเกิดอะไรขึ้น
จนกระทั่งวังน้ำวนแห่งนั้นได้เริ่มคืนสู่สภาพเดิม และดึงเอาพระพุทธรูปองค์หนึ่งขึ้นมาจากใต้น้ำแห่งนั้นลอยขึ้นมาอยู่เหนือผิวน้ำ มีการดำผุดดำว่ายตลอดเวลา ไม่ต่างกับอากัปกิริยาของเด็กที่เล่นน้ำ ชาวประมงที่เห็นเหตุการณ์ทราบได้ทันทีว่าพระพุทธรูปองค์นี้ ต้องเป็นพระพุทธรูปศักดิ์สิทธิ์อย่างแน่นอน จึงสามารถแสดงปาฏิหาริย์ให้เห็นเช่นนี้ได้ สมควรที่จะอัญเชิญขึ้นมาประดิษฐานบนบกให้ผู้คนทั้งหลายได้กราบไหว้บูชา จึงพร้อมใจกันลงไปอัญเชิญขึ้นมา นำไปประดิษฐานไว้ที่วัดไตรภูมิ บริเวณที่ชาวประมงเหล่านั้นนั่งปรึกษากัน ปัจจุบัน คือพื้นที่วังมะขามแฟบ (ไม้ระกำ) ซึ่งอยู่ทางทิศเหนือของเมืองเพชรบูรณ์
พระพุทธรูปองค์นี้มีลักษณะแบบพระพุทธรูปสมัยลพบุรี แกะสลักลวดลายด้วยความประณีตงดงาม พระพุทธรูปทรงราชาภรณ์ที่เรียกว่า พระทรงเครื่อง ลักษณะนั่งขัดสมาธิเพชร พระพักตร์กว้าง พระขนงเป็นเหลี่ยม พระโอษฐ์ยิ้ม ศิราภรณ์เป็นเทริด ต่อมาชาวเมืองเรียกพระพุทธรูปองค์นี้ว่าพระมหาธรรมราชา
อีกตำนานหนึ่งกล่าวว่า มีสองสามีภรรยาไปทอดแหในแม่น้ำป่าสัก พายเรือไปเรื่อยๆ จากบ้านของเขาไปถึงบ้านนาสารก็หาปลาไม่ได้แม้สักตัวเดียว พอไปถึงวังน้ำลึกก็ทอดแหลงไปแล้วดึงแหไม่ขึ้น จึงดำน้ำลงไป 3 ครั้ง เพื่อเอาแหขึ้นมาก็ขึ้นไม่ได้ จึงดำน้ำลงไปอีก 3 ครั้ง พบพระพุทธรูปองค์หนึ่งสีเหลืองอร่ามงดงามมาก จึงอัญเชิญไปไว้ที่วัดไตรภูมิ ตามตำนานกล่าวว่า พระพุทธรูปองค์นี้หายตัวได้ เมื่อนำพระพุทธรูปมาประดิษฐานที่วัดไตรภูมิได้ปีเดียว พระพุทธรูปหายไปจากตู้กระจก วันหนึ่งหลวงตาพราหมณ์ได้ไปวิดปลา โดยทำนบกั้นน้ำแล้วใช้โซงโลง (ชะนาง) วิดปลา วิดตลอดวันตลอดคืนน้ำเริ่มแห้งขอด ก็ได้ยินเสียง จ๋อมแจ๋ม แต่ก็ไม่เห็นอะไร แต่พอใกล้แจ้งก็พบพระทองเหลืองอร่ามก็เลยกระโดลงไปอุ้มพระไว้ หลวงตาพราหมณ์จำได้ว่าเป็นพระวัดไตรภูมิ จึงอัญเชิญพระไปไว้ทีวัดอีก นำพระมาประทับไว้ในตู้แล้วลั่นกุญแจไว้ 2 ดอก พระมหาธรรมราชาประทับอยู่ได้ หนึ่งปีก็หายไปจากวัดไตรภูมิอีกเป็นครั้งที่สอง ต่อมาสองสามีภรรยาคนเดิมที่เคยทอดแหได้พระพุทธรูปองค์นี้มาครั้งแรกก็ไปทอดแหอีก เมื่อพายเรือไปถึงบ้านนาสารก็ทอดแหลงไปบริเวณที่เป็นวังน้ำอีก แหก็ติดอีก แกดำน้ำลงไปดูถึง 2 ครั้ง ก็พบพระพุทธรูปองค์เดิม จึงได้อัญเชิญไปประดิษฐานที่วัดไตรภูมิ พระอาจารย์ที่วัดแปลกใจมากจึงไปหาหมอมาสะกด เพราะเชื่อว่าเป็นพระปรอท หมอจึงเอาตะปูมาตอกสะกดที่อุ้งพระบาท จึงไม่สามารถหลบไปได้อีก
จากตำนานที่เล่าสืบขานกันมาเช่นนี้ ทำให้ชาวเพชรบูรณ์และจังหวัดใกล้เคียงต่างมีศรัทธาความเชื่อว่า พระพุทธรูปศักดิ์สิทธิ์มาก หากปีใดมีความแห้งแล้งเกิดขึ้นก็จะทำพิธีบวงสรวง โดยยกเป็นศาลเพียงตาแล้วอัญเชิญพระมหาธรรมราชาองค์นี้อาบน้ำ ผู้ทำพิธีจะนุ่งขาวอุ้มพระพุทธรูปดำน้ำ หากผู้อุ้มพระหันหน้าไปทิศใดก็จะทำให้ฝนตกในทิศนั้นๆ สามวันสามคืน หากต้องการให้ฝนตกตามฤดูกาลก็อัญเชิญพระมหาธรรมราชาแห่รอบเมือง มีการสวดคาถาปลาช่อนด้วยก็จะบันดาลให้ฝนตกตามฤดูกาลได้

พอวันรุ่งขึ้นมีพิธีทำบุญวันสารท ชาวบ้านจะนำภัตตาหารมาถวายพระที่วัด มีข้าวกระยาสารทพร้อมด้วยเครื่องไทยธรรมต่างๆ เมื่อถวายภัตตาหารแด่พระภิกษุสามเณรแล้ว ก็จะมีพิธีอุ้มพระดำน้ำมีการรำถวายบวงสรวงด้วยการฟ้อนชุดต่างๆ
