1. ไตวายเฉียบพลัน คือ ภาวะที่เกิดขึ้นในเวลารวดเร็ว ส่วนใหญ่เกิดจากการที่เลือดไปเลี้ยงที่ไตน้อยลง เช่น มีอาการความดันโลหิตต่ำ, อยู่ในภาวะช็อกนานๆ หรือมีการเสียเลือดมากๆ แต่ภาวะไตวายเฉียบพลันสามารถรักษาให้ไตกลับมาทำงานปกติได้
2. ไตวายเรื้อรัง คือภาวะที่เนื้อไตถูกทำลายอย่างต่อเนื่อง จนไตไม่สามารถกลับมาทำงานได้อย่างปกติ คือไม่สามารถรักษาให้หายได้ สามารถแบ่งระยะของโรคไตเรื้อรังได้ 5 ระยะ คือ
ระยะที่1 ไตเริ่มเสื่อม พบโปรตีนในปัสสาวะ ค่าGFR อยู่ที่ ≤ 90
ระยะที่ 2 ไตเสื่อม ค่าGFR อยู่ที่ 60-89
ระยะที่ 3 ไตเสื่อม ค่าGFR อยู่ที่ 30-59
ระยะที่ 4 ไตเสื่อม ค่าGFR อยู่ที่ 15-29
ระยะที่ 5 ไตวาย ค่าGFR น้อยกว่า 15
