"โฮง" หมายถึง โรง ห้องโถง หรือหอที่มีขนาดกว้างใหญ่ "มูนมัง" หมายถึง ทรัพย์สมบัติ, มรดก จึงมีความหมายรวมกันว่า ห้องที่เก็บรวบรวมทรัพย์สมบัติ ข้าวของ ที่สื่อ ถึงความเป็นมาและเรื่องราวของเมืองขอนแก่น ที่สะท้อนให้เห็นวิถีชีวิตความเป็นอยู่ของชาวขอนแก่น ตั้งแต่อดีตถึงปัจจุบัน

ภายในพิพิธภัณฑ์มีการจัดนิทรรศการ แบ่งออกเป็น 5 โซน คือ แนะนำเมืองขอนแก่น, ประวัติศาสตร์เมืองขอนแก่น และวัฒนธรรมโบราณ, การตั้งเมือง, บ้านเมืองและวิถีชีวิตของชาวขอนแก่น และขอนแก่นวันนี้

โซนที่ 1 "แนะนำเมืองขอนแก่น" เป็นข้อความที่เล่าเรื่องราวที่มาของชื่อเมืองขอนแก่น การขุดค้นซากโครงกระดูกไดโนเสาร์ "ไซแอมโมเซารัส อีสานเนนวีส ภูเวียงโนโนเซารัส สิรินธรเน่" อายุกว่า 1,600 ล้านปี โดยมีทั้งแผนผัง ภาพถ่าย และภาพจำลองผังเมืองขอนแก่น

โซนที่ 4 "บ้านเมืองและวิถีของชาวขอนแก่น" เสนอเรื่องราว วิถีชีวิต และการดำรงชีพของคนที่อาศัยอยู่ในเมืองขอนแก่นเมื่อ 100 ปีที่ผ่านมา ที่มีความหลากหลายทางเชื้อชาติ ศาสนา วัฒนธรรม ที่ผู้คนเหล่านั้นเดินทางเข้ามาประกอบอาชีพ ทำมาค้าขาย เช่น ชาวต่างชาติ ทั้งฝรั่ง ชาวจีน คนเวียดนาม แขกอินเดีย มีการจำลองชีวิตความเป็นอยู่ ผ่านรูปปั้นหุ่นขนาดเท่าคนจริง

โซนที่ 5 "ขอนแก่นวันนี้" เป็นเรื่องราวชีวิต ความเป็นอยู่ของชาวขอนแก่นในปัจจุบัน ทั้งด้านวัฒนธรรมประเพณี ที่ยังคงปฏิบัติสืบทอดกันมาจนถึงปัจจุบันรวมถึงเศรษฐกิจการเมือง การปกครอง การศึกษา ฯลฯ

รวมทั้งประวัติ ภาพถ่ายบุคคลที่มีความสำคัญต่อประเทศไทย และชาวขอนแก่น เช่น น.พ.กระแส ชนะวงศ์ นายแพทย์รางวัลแม็กไซไซ ภราดร ศรีชาพันธุ์ นักเทนนิสชื่อดังของเมืองไทย เป็นต้น

การนำเสนอเรื่องราวของทั้ง 5 โซน มีการจัดแสดงแบบผสม ทั้งภาพวาดเรื่องราวต่างๆ เป็นฉากด้านหลัง ประกอบกับงานปั้น ที่เป็นบรรยา กาศเสมือนจริง อยู่ในตู้กระจกขนาดใหญ่ ด้านหน้าเป็นการนำเสนอข้อความอธิบายเรื่องราวนั้นๆ ไว้พอสังเขป แต่สามารถเข้าใจได้ง่าย โดยเรียงลำดับตั้งแต่โซนที่ 1-5

ส่วนกลางของพื้นที่พิพิธภัณฑ์ และในบางส่วน จะขยายเรื่องราวด้วยการนำเสนอเป็นงานปั้นเล่าเรื่องราวต่างๆ ที่มีขนาดเท่ากับตัวคนจริงๆ ทั้งศิลปวัฒนธรรม ประเพณี วิถีชีวิต ศาสนา การละเล่น การค้าขาย ฯลฯ รวมไปถึงข้าวของเครื่องใช้ตั้งแต่อดีตจนถึงปัจจุบัน
