พระเจ้าบรมวงศ์เธอ พระองค์เจ้าจิรประวัติวรเดช กรมหลวงนครไชยศรีสุรเดช เป็นพระราชโอรสองค์ที่ ๑๗ ในพระบาทสมเด็จพระจุลจอมเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัว ประสูติแต่ เจ้าจอมมารดาทับทิม (ธิดาพระยาอัพภันตริกามาตย์ (ดิศ โรจนดิศ)) เมื่อวันที่ ๗ พฤศจิกายน พ.ศ. ๒๔๑๙ ในพระบรมมหาราชวัง
พระองค์เจ้าจิรประวัติวรเดช ทรงสำเร็จการศึกษาชั้นต้นที่โรงเรียนพระตำหนักสวนกุหลาบ เป็นพระราชโอรสกลุ่มแรก ในพระบาทสมเด็จพระจุลจอมเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัว ที่ทรงไปศึกษาต่อในทวีปยุโรป เมื่อ พ.ศ. ๒๔๒๘ พร้อมกัน ๔ พระองค์ คือ

พระองค์เจ้าจิรประวัติวรเดช ทรงศึกษาวิชาทหาร ที่ประเทศเดนมาร์ก เมื่อ พ.ศ. ๒๔๓๔ - ๒๔๓๗ ได้รับพระราชทานพระยศเป็นนายร้อยตรีแห่งกองทัพบกประเทศเดนมาร์ก จากนั้นทรงเข้าศึกษาในโรงเรียนชั้นสูงสำหรับนายทหารทั่วไป เมื่อทรงสอบวิชาทหารปืนใหญ่ได้แล้ว ใน พ.ศ. ๒๔๓๙ จึงออกไปฝึกราชการอยู่ในกรมทหารปืนใหญ่สนามของประเทศเดนมาร์ก
เสด็จกลับประเทศไทยเมื่อ พ.ศ. ๒๔๔๐ เข้ารับราชการในกองทัพบกและกระทรวงกลาโหม ทรงดำรงตำแหน่งผู้บัญชาการกรมยุทธนาธิการ, ปลัดกองทัพบก, เสนาธิการทหารบก และเสนาบดีกระทรวงกลาโหม ทรงเป็นจอมพลพระองค์แรกของ กองทัพบกสยาม
ขณะดำรงตำแหน่งเสนาบดีกระทรวงกลาโหมได้ทรงปรึกษากับ เจ้าฟ้าจักรพงษ์ภูวนาถ เสนาธิการทหารบก ถึงความจำเป็นที่ประเทศไทยจะต้องมีเครื่องบินไว้ใช้ป้องกันประเทศ เหมือนอย่างอารยประเทศ และริเริ่มจัดตั้งกองบินทหารบก ซึ่งในเวลาต่อมาได้พัฒนาเป็น กองทัพอากาศไทย
