พระราชดํารัสเศรษฐกิจพอเพียง ของพระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัว พระราชทาน ณ วันที่ 4 ธันวาคม 2541
“เศรษฐกิจพอเพียง... จะทำความเจริญให้แก่ประเทศได้
แต่ต้องมีความเพียร แล้วต้องอดทน
ต้องไม่ใจร้อน ต้องไม่พูดมาก ต้องไม่ทะเลาะกัน
ถ้าทำโดยเข้าใจกัน เชื่อว่าทุกคนจะมีความพอใจได้...”

"เศรษฐกิจพอเพียงเป็นเสมือนรากฐานของชีวิต รากฐานความมั่นคงของแผ่นดิน
เปรียบเสมือนเสาเข็มที่ถูกตอกรองรับบ้านเรือนตัวอาคารไว้นั่นเอง
สิ่งก่อสร้างจะมั่นคงได้ก็อยู่ที่เสาเข็ม
แต่คนส่วนมากมองไม่เห็นเสาเข็มและลืมเสาเข็มเสียด้วยซ้ำไป"

ความเข้าใจของคนส่วนมากต่อเศรษฐกิจพอเพียง
คนส่วนมากมักเข้าใจว่า เศรษฐกิจพอเพียงเป็นเรื่องของเกษตรกรเท่านั้น ซึ่งแท้จริงผู้ประกอบอาชีพอื่น ก็สามารถนำเอาแนวพระราชดำรัสไปประยุกต์ใช้ได้ทั้งสิ้น

"ผู้ที่เป็นเจ้าของโรงงานอุตสาหกรรม ก็สามารถนำมาประยุกต์ใช้โดยเน้นการผลิตด้านการเกษตรอย่างต่อเนื่อง และไม้ควรทำอุตสาหกรรมขนาดใหญ่เกินไป เพราะหากขนาดใหญ่เกินไป ก็จะต้องพึ่งพิงสินค้าวัตถุดิบและเทคโนโลยีจากต่างประเทศเข้ามาผลิตสินค้า ต้องคำนึงถึงสิ่งที่อยู่ในประเทศไทยก่อน เพื่อให้ไม่ต้องพึ่งพิงต่างชาติ

อย่างเช่นปัจจุบันผู้ที่เป็นเกษตรกร หากมีความพอประมาณในใจตน ไม่นึกแต่จะซื้อรถคันใหม่ หรือเครื่องมืออำนวยความสะดวกอยู่ร่ำไป ก็จะมีความสุข"

เศรษฐกิจพอเพียง จึงเป็นพระราชดำรัสที่พระราชทานให้ประชาชนดำเนินตามวิถีชีวิตแห่งการดำรงชีพที่สมบูรณ์ โดยมีธรรมะเป็นเครื่องกำกับ และมีใจตนเป็นสำคัญ ซึ่งก็คือวิถีชีวิตไทย ที่ยึด ทางสายกลาง ของความพอดี
