หัวหิน เป็นอำเภอที่ทุกคนรู้จักกันเป็นอย่างดีทั้งชาวไทยและชาวต่างประเทศ เดิมมีชื่อว่า "บ้านสมอเรียง" หรือ "บ้านแหลมหิน" ซึ่งพระบาทสมเด็จพระปกเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัว (รัชกาลที่ 7) ได้ทรงสร้างวังไกลกังวลเพื่อประทับพักผ่อนในฤดูร้อน และปัจจุบันวังไกลกังวลนั้นเป็นที่ประทับของพระมหากษัตริย์องค์ปัจจุบัน ทุกวันนี้หัวหินมีชื่อเสียง อำเภอหัวหิน เป็นอำเภอหนึ่งของจังหวัดประจวบคีรีขันธ์ ได้รับประกาศยกฐานะจากกิ่งอำเภอหัวหิน อำเภอปราณบุรี ตั่งแต่วันที่ 12 เมษายน พ.ศ. 2492 ประกาศในราชกิจจานุเบกษา วันที่ 19 เมษายน พ.ศ. 2492 ชุมชนหัวหินก่อตั้งขึ้นในราวปี พ.ศ. 2377 ในรัชสมัยพระบาทสมเด็จพระนั่งเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัว รัชกาลที่ 3 เมื่อชาวบ้านกลุ่มหนึ่งจากทางตอนเหนือละทิ้งถิ่นฐาน และเดินทางมาจนถึงพื้นที่ที่เป็นบริเวณใกล้กับเขาตะเกียบในปัจจุบัน แล้วได้ตั้งถิ่นฐานที่บริเวณนี้ เพราะเห็นว่าเป็นหาดทรายที่สวยงามและแปลกกว่าที่อื่น คือมีกลุ่ม หินกระจัดกระจายอยู่ทั่วไป อีกทั้งที่ดินก็มีความอุดมสมบูรณ์ เหมาะสำหรับทำการเกษตรและการประมง แล้วตั้งชื่อหมู่บ้านว่า “บ้านสมอเรียง” ต่อมาพระเจ้าบรมวงศ์เธอกรมพระนเรศวรฤทธิ์ (พระองค์เจ้าชายกฤษดาภินิหาร ต้นราชสกุลกฤดากร) ได้มาสร้างตำหนักหลังใหญ่ชื่อ “แสนสำราญสุขเวศน์” ที่ ด้านใต้ของหมู่หินริมทะเล (ปัจจุบันคือบริเวณที่อยู่ติดกับโรงแรมโซฟิเทลฯ) และทรงขนานนามหาดทรายบริเวณนี้เสียใหม่ว่า “หัวหิน” จนเมื่อเวลาล่วงไป ทั้งตำบล ในบริเวณนี้ก็ถูกเรียกในชื่อเดียวกันว่า “หัวหิน” และเจริญเติบโตขยายขึ้นเป็นอำเภอหัวหินจนถึงปัจจุบัน
