ประเทศไทยนั้นเป็นสังคมหนึ่งซึ่งยอมรับพระพุทธศาสนา และได้รับการหล่อหลอมจากหลักธรรม คำสอนในพระพุทธศาสนามายาวนาน วิถีชีวิตของคนไทยส่วนใหญ่ตั้งแต่กำเนิดจนถึงตาย จึงเกี่ยวโยงสัมพันธ์เป็นอันหนึ่งอันเดียวกันกับพระพุทธศาสนา แต่เมื่อสังคมโลกเปิดกว้างขึ้นทั้งในด้านสื่อสารมวลชน เศรษฐกิจ การเมืองและวัฒนธรรม จึงเป็นเหตุผลสำคัญที่นำพาให้สังคมไทยก้าวเข้าไปสู่กระแสแห่งยุคโลกาภิวัฒน์ ส่งผลให้สังคมไทยต้องเผชิญกับภาวะวิกฤติในหลายๆ ด้าน กล่าวคือ

พระพุทธศาสนา จึงเป็นกระบวนทัศน์ใหม่ที่จะสามารถนำหลักการสำคัญที่มีอยู่ในพระไตรปิฏกมาประยุกต์ใช้ในการแก้ปัญหาในแบบองค์รวม เพื่อจะทำให้การแก้ปัญหาเป็นไปอย่างครบวงจร อันจะส่งผลดีกับการแก้ไขปัญหาวิกฤติต่างๆ ของสังคมไทยต่อไป

วิกฤติต่างๆที่เกิดขึ้นล้วนโยงใยถึงกันเป็นลูกโซ่ เป็นปัจจัยเกื้อหนุนซึ่งกันและกัน เมื่อเกิดวิกฤติขึ้นในด้านใดด้านหนึ่งของสังคมนั้นหมายถึงว่า ผลพวงจากวิกฤตินั้นย่อมกระทบต่อระบบในสังคมนั้นด้วย เช่น บ้านเมืองปัจจุบันเกิดภาวะวิกฤติ เพราะเป็นผลกระทบจากภาวะทางเศรษฐกิจทรุดตัว นักการเมือง บุคคลในสังคมหวังเพื่อจะกอบโกยผลประโยชน์เป็นส่วนตัวมากขึ้น ประชาชนอดอยากมากขึ้น จึงเป็นภาวะวิกฤติทางสังคมเมื่อบุคคลในสังคมมีมากขึ้นความเห็นแก่ตัวมากขึ้น สภาพสิ่งแวดล้อมรอบตัวจึงไม่มีคนเอาใจใส่ดูแลจนเกิดเป็นภาวะวิกฤติทางสิ่งแวดล้อม ถึงเวลาแล้วที่สังคมไทยจะต้องนำกระบวนทัศน์ทางพระพุทธศาสนามาปรับใช้ตามความเหมาะสมกับสถานการณ์ต่างๆ ในขณะนี้

1.2 ผลกระทบต่อสังคมไทย

1) ในแง่ของปัจเจกบุคคล คนไทยย่อมประสบกับความไม่เชื่อมั่นในสถานะของประเทศ ไม่ไว้ใจในข้าราชการและนักการเมือง ในการบริหารของคณะรัฐบาลและความมั่นคงของประเทศ

2) ในแง่ของสังคม มุมมองโดยรวมของสังคมไทยย่อมไม่เป็นที่ไว้วางใจของชาวต่างชาติเท่าที่ควร ความเชื่อมั่นในรัฐบาลโดยรวมก็ลดลงตามลำดับ

3) ในแง่ของเศรษฐกิจ การบริหารด้านนโยบายของรัฐบาลเป็นผลโดยตรงด้านเศรษฐกิจของประเทศ หากรัฐบาลวางแนวนโยบายผิดพลาด ต่างชาติขาดความเชื่อมั่นในรัฐบาล ย่อมเกิดเป็นวิกฤติเศรษฐกิจตามมาอย่างแน่นอน

4) ในแง่ของศาสนา ปัจจุบันกำลังเป็นปัจจัยหนึ่งที่จะก่อให้เกิดความขัดแย้งระหว่างศาสนา อันเกิดจากการพยายามแทรกแซงกิจการพระพุทธศาสนา และพยายามลบล้างความเป็นพุทธศาสนาในหน่วยงานนั้นๆ ที่นักการเมืองบางคนเป็นรัฐมนตรี ดังที่เป็นข่าวในปัจจุบัน
