อุทยานแห่งชาติผาแต้ม เป็นอุทยานแห่งชาติที่ตั้งอยู่ทางตะวันออกสุดของประเทศไทย สามารถรับชมพระอาทิตย์ขึ้นได้เป็นจุดแรกของประเทศไทย อยู่ในพื้นที่ของจังหวัดอุบลราชธานี จุดที่น่าสนใจคือภาพเขียนสียุคก่อนประวัติศาสตร์ผาแต้ม และจุดชมพระอาทิตย์แสงแรกแห่งสยาม
อุทยานแห่งชาติผาแต้ม มีพื้นที่ราว 340 ตารางกิโลเมตร มีเนื้อที่ครอบคลุมอยู่ในท้องที่อำเภอโขงเจียม อำเภอศรีเมืองใหม่ และอำเภอโพธิ์ไทร จังหวัดอุบลราชธานี ประกอบด้วย สภาพป่าที่อุดมสมบูรณ์ สัตว์ป่านานาชนิด มีจุดเด่นที่สวยงามตามธรรมชาติมากมาย เช่น ผาชัน น้ำตกสร้อยสวรรค์ เสาเฉลียง ถ้ำปาฏิหารย์ ภูนาทาม เป็นต้น อีกทั้งยังได้มีการค้นพบภาพเขียนสีโบราณ สมัยก่อนประวัติศาสตร์ อายุราว 3,000-4,000 ปี ที่บริเวณผาขาม ผาแต้ม ผาเจ็ก ผาเมย และถือได้ว่าเป็นอุทยานแห่งชาติ แห่งแรกในประเทศไทยที่มีแม่น้ำโขง ซึ่งเป็นเส้นกั้นพรมแดน ระหว่างประเทศไทย และประเทศลาวเป็นแนวเขตอุทยานแห่งชาติที่ยาวที่สุด ทำให้สามารถมองเห็นทิวทัศน์ป่าเขา ทางฝั่งประเทศลาวได้เป็นอย่างดี
ประวัติความเป็นมา
ในอดีตชาวบ้านท้องถิ่นที่ทำกินในบริเวณใกล้เคียงพื้นที่ป่าภูผา น้อยคนนักที่จะเดินทางเข้าไปในป่าดังกล่าว เนื่องจากมีความเชื่อว่า “ผาแต้มเป็นเขตต้องห้าม ภูผาเหล่านี้มีความศักดิ์สิทธิ์ เป็นภูผาแห่งความตาย ใครล่วงล้ำเข้าไปมักมีอันเป็นไป อาจเจ็บไข้หรือเป็นอันตรายถึงชีวิตได้”
พื้นที่ป่าภูผาบริเวณผาแต้มได้ถูกเปิดเผยจนเป็นที่รู้จักกันทั่วไป เมื่อคณะอาจารย์และนักศึกษาจากภาควิชามนุษย์วิทยา มหาวิทยาลัยศิลปากรได้มาทำการสำรวจและค้นพบภาพเขียนสีโบราณสมัยก่อนประวัติศาสตร์ที่ผาแต้ม ท้องที่บ้านกุ่ม ตำบลห้วยไผ่ อำเภอโขงเจียม จังหวัดอุบลราชธานี ประกอบกับสภาพป่าในบริเวณใกล้เคียงยังอุดมสมบูรณ์ จึงได้ทำหนังสือบันทึกจากภาควิชาฯ ลงวันที่ 26 พฤษภาคม พ.ศ.2524 เสนอต่อ กองอุทยานแห่งชาติ กรมป่าไม้ ขอให้จัดตั้งป่าภูผาในบริเวณผาแต้มเป็นอุทยานแห่งชาติ
การเดินทาง
รถยนต์ จากจังหวัดอุบลราชธานีไปยังอำเภอโขงเจียม ระยะทางประมาณ 80 กิโลเมตร แล้วเดินทางไปตามเส้นทางยุทธศาสตร์สายโขงเจียม-เขมราฐ อีก 15 กิโลเมตร เลี้ยวขวาต่อไปอีก 5 กิโลเมตร จะถึงภูผาขาม ท้องที่บ้านหนองผือน้อย ตำบลห้วยไผ่ อำเภอโขงเจียม ซึ่งที่ทำการอุทยานแห่งชาติผาแต้มตั้งอยู่ ปัจจุบันเส้นทางนี้เป็นถนนลาดยางไปสิ้นสุดบนลานภูผาขาม
