กองบังคับการตำรวจท่องเที่ยว มีภารกิจหน้าที่ในการช่วยเหลืออำนวยความสะดวกและรักษาความปลอดภัยให้กับนักท่องเที่ยว ทั้งชาวไทยและชาวต่างประเทศ โดยประสานการปฏิบัติกับหน่วยงานทั้งภาครัฐและเอกชนที่เกี่ยวข้อง รวมทั้งส่งเสริมอุตสาหกรรมการท่องเที่ยว ของประเทศในช่วง ในช่วงเวลาที่ผ่านมาสถานการณ์ด้านการท่องเที่ยวมีอัตราการเจริญเติบโตอย่างรวดเร็วและต่อเนื่อง ปริมาณนักท่องเที่ยวเดินทางเข้าสู่ประเทศมีจำนวนเพิ่มมาก ขึ้น ก่อให้เกิดรายได้มหาศาลเข้าสู่ระบบเศรษฐกิจ โดยเฉพาะประเทศซึ่งอยู่ในช่วงกำลังเผชิญกับปัญหาวิกฤตการณ์ทางเศรษฐกิจ ในขณะเดียวกันปัญหาที่อาจจะเกิดขึ้นกับนักท่องเที่ยวก็มีแนวโน้มเพิ่มมากขึ้นเช่นเดียวกัน

ดังนั้นเพื่อให้การปฏิบัติงานรักษาความปลอดภัยแก่นักท่องเที่ยว ของตำรวจท่องเที่ยวบังเกิดผลและเป็นไปตามวัตถุประสงค์ของหน่วยงานอย่างมีประสิทธิภาพ จึงได้กำหนดนโยบายในการปฏิบัติงานที่สำคัญไว้ 7 ด้าน
1. ด้านความปลอดภัยในชีวิตและทรัพย์สินของนักท่องเที่ยว ป้องกันอาชญากรรม ปราบปรามอาชญากรรม
2. ด้านการสอบสวนและอำนวยความยุติธรรมทางคดี
3. นโยบายความมั่นคงภายในประเทศ
4. ด้านการให้บริการและงานช่วยเหลือนักท่องเที่ยว และประชาชน
5. ชุมนุมและมวลชนสัมพันธ์
6. ด้านการบริหาร พัฒนาองค์กรและบริหารงาน พัฒนาทรัพยากรมนุษย์
7.ด้านการปกครองบังคับบัญชา
