        เป็นชั้นบรรยากาศชั้นล่างสุดที่อยู่สูงจากผิวโลกขึ้นไป10-12 กิโลเมตร เป็นชั้นที่มีความหนาแน่นมาก
ที่สุด และใกล้ผิวโลกที่สุดในชั้นนี้จะเกิด ปรากฏการณ์ที่สำคัญ ๆ ได้แก่ เมฆ ฝน หิมะ พายุ เมื่อความสูงเพิ่มขึ้นอุณหภูมิลดลง 0.6 oC ต่อ 100 เมตร อุณหภูมิในชั้นนี้มีค่าระหว่าง -73oC  ถึง -53oC เนื่องจากอากาศและละอองน้ำผิวโลกสามารถดูดกลืนคลื่นแสง เช่น แสงที่มองเห็นด้วยตาเปล่า (visible light) แสงอุลตราไวโอเลต (ultraviolet,UV) แสง อินฟราเรด (infrared, IR) ได้มากกว่า รอยต่อระหว่างชั้นโทรโปสเฟียร์ (troposphere) และชั้นต่อไปเรียกว่า tropopause เป็นที่ที่มีอุณหภูมิคงที่
