ประวัติความเป็นมาของภูเก็ต มีหลายกระแส บ้างก็ว่าภูเก็ตเป็นเกาะ ที่ค้นพบโดยชาวประมง แต่เดิมเรียกว่า “บูกิต” ซึ่งเป็นภาษามลายูแปลว่าภูเขา เพราะเมื่อมองจากทะเล จะเห็นเหมือนมีภูเขา โผล่ขึ้นกลางน้ำ แต่บางกระแส ก็ว่าภูเก็ตมาจากคำว่า “ภูเก็จ” แปลว่าภูเขาที่มีค่า ซึ่งคำว่าภูเก็จนี้มีบันทึก ในเอกสารเมืองถลางว่า ใช้กันมาตั้งแต่ปี พ.ศ.2328 มีฐานะเป็นเมือง ที่ขึ้นตรงต่อเมืองถลาง ซึ่งต่อมาคำนี้ได้เปลี่ยนเป็น “ภูเก็ต” โดยไม่ทราบสาเหตุ ดังมีปรากฏอยู่ในหนังสือราชกิจจานุเบกษา ตั้งแต่ปี พ.ศ.2450 เป็นต้นมา โดยเริ่มเป็นที่รู้จักกัน ในฐานะ มณฑลภูเก็ต ในสมัยรัชกาลที่ 5 และเปลี่ยนมาเป็น จังหวัดภูเก็ต ในเวลาต่อมา
