ถนนข้าวสาร เป็นถนนที่สร้างขึ้นใน พ.ศ. 2435 รัชสมัยพระบาทสมเด็จพระจุลจอมเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัว โดยกรมโยธาธิการได้ กราบบังคมทูลให้ตัดถนนตรอกข้าวสาร เริ่มตั้งแต่ถนนหน้าวัดชนะสงคราม (ซึ่งได้นามว่าถนนชนะสงคราม) ตัดมาทางตะวันออกตามตรอกข้าวสารแล้วสร้างสะพานข้ามคลองมาบรรจบกับถนนเฟื่องนครตอนหน้าสวนหลวงตึกดิน พระราชทานนามถนนตามเดิมว่า "ถนนข้าวสาร"
