คณะศึกษาศาสตร์ ได้เปิดสอนเป็นคณะที่

คณะศึกษาศาสตร์ ได้เปิดสอนเป็นคณะที่สอง ของมหาวิทยาลัยสงขลานครินทร์เมื่อปีที่ พ.ศ.2511 รับนักศึกษารุ่นแรก จำนวน 60 คน เป็นนักศึกษาสาขาวิทยาศาสตร์ จำนวน 35 คน และสาขาศิลปศาสตร์ จำนวน 25 คน ใช้อาคารเรียน ร่วมกับคณะวิศวกรรมศาสตร์ ที่กรุงเทพมหานคร ต่อมาได้ย้ายมาเรียนที่ ตำบลรูสะมิแล อำเภอเมือง จังหวัดปัตตานี เมื่อวันที่ 9 พฤศจิกายน 2511 (ซึ่งมหาวิทยาลัยได้กำหนด วันดังกล่าว เป็น วันรูสะมิแล) มีอาจารย์จำนวน 11 คน ศาสตราจารย์นพ ปาลกะวงศ์ ณ อยุธยา เป็นคณบดีคนแรก คณะศึกษาศาสตร์นับเป็นคณะแรกของมหาวิทยาลัยสงขลานครินทร์ ที่เปิดสอน ในภาคใต้
ในระยะแรก คณะศึกษาศาสตร์ มีวัตถุประสงค์ผลิตครูระดับปริญญาตรี ที่สอนระดับมัธยมศึกษา ในเขต 14 จังหวัดภาคใต้ และเพื่อขยายการศึกษาระดับอุดมศึกษาในวิชาการศึกษา ออกไปสู่ส่วนภูมิภาคให้สอดคล้อง กับนโยบายของรัฐ ตามแผน พัฒนาภาคใต้ พร้อมกันนั้นจะร่วมมือกับ ชุมชนในการปรับปรุงการศึกษา และยกระดับ วิทยฐานะ ของครูอาจารย์ให้สูงขึ้นด้วย ปีการศึกษา 2511 เป็นปีแรกที่ คณะศึกษาศาสตร์ เปิดทำการสอน ในสาขาวิชาเอกคณิตศาสตร์ วิทยาศาสตร์ทั่วไป ภาษาอังกฤษ ภาษาไทยและสังคมศาสตร์ ต่อมาคณะศึกษาศาสตร์ ขยายภารกิจเพื่อตอบสนอง ความต้องการของสังคม ตามศักยภาพและความพร้อม โดยมีพัฒนาการมาตามลำดับ โดยปัจจุบันประกอบด้วยภาควิชาพลศึกษา การศึกษา บริหารการศึกษา เทคโนโลยีการศึกษา จิตวิทยาและการแนะแนว ประเมินผลและวิจัยทางการศึกษา โรงเรียนสาธิต และโรงเรียนอนุบาลสาธิต
