จังหวัดนครสวรรค์มีประวัติความเป็นมาคือ เป็นเมืองโบราณที่ถูกสันนิษฐานว่าตั้งขึ้นในสมัยกรุงสุโขทัย โดยมีชื่ออยู่ในศิลาจารึกเรียกว่า เมืองพระบาง เป็นเมืองหน้าด่านสำคัญในการทำสงครามมาทุกสมัย ตั้งแต่สมัยกรุงสุโขทัย กรุงธนบุรี จนถึงกรุงรัตนโกสินทร์ นครสวรรค์ มีชื่อเรียกที่รู้จักกันส่วนใหญ่ในชื่อ ปากน้ำโพ โดยปรากฏเรียกกันมาตั้งแต่ในสมัยกรุงศรีอยุธยา และลักษณะภูมิประเทศของจังหวัดนี้ คือส่วนใหญ่เป็นที่ราบลุ่มเหมาะแก่การเกษตร เป็นที่ราบประมาณ 3 ใน 4 ของพื้นที่จังหวัด มีแม่น้ำสายสำคัญคือ แม่น้ำปิง แม่น้ำยม และแม่น้ำน่าน ไหลมารวมกันเป็น แม่น้ำเจ้าพระยา
