ขึ้นทะเบียนเป็นมรดกโลกเมื่อปี พ.ศ. 2534 เป็นโบราณสถานที่มีร่องรอยการตั้งถิ่นฐานตั้งแต่สมัยก่อนประวัติศาสตร์ มีพื้นที่ครอบคลุมกว่า 45.14 ตารางกิโลเมตรใน 4 ตำบล มีโบราณสถานทั้งหมด 215 แห่ง แต่สำรวจค้นพบ 204 แห่ง มีจุดโดดเด่นของโบราณสถานขนาดใหญ่หลายแห่งที่สร้างขึ้นจากศิลาแลง และมีเขตโบราณสถานสำคัญถึง 5 เขต อันประกอบไปด้วยวัดสำคัญต่างๆ มากมา เช่น วัดช้างล้อม วัดเจดีย์เจ็ดแถว วัดนางพญา วัดสุวรรณคีรี วัดพระศรีรัตนมหาธาตุ วัดสวนแก้วอุทยานใหญ่ วัดสวนแก้วอุทยานน้อย และ ศาลหลักเมือง เป็นต้น ด้วยเหตุที่ว่าเป็นเมืองโบราณที่ตั้งอยู่ท่ามกลางธรรมชาติป่าเขา แยกตัวออกจากความเจริญของตัวเมืองในยุคสมัยใหม่ จึงทำให้อุทยานประวัติศาสตร์แห่งนี้มีความสวยงามทั้งทางธรรมชาติและมีความสมบูรณ์ของโบราณสถานมากที่สุดในเมืองไทย
