การศึกษามีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษาหลักการของการตรวจสอบและประเมินสภาพทั่วไปของสะพานตามแนวทางของ AASHTO เพื่อให้ทราบถึงความสามารถในการรับน้ำหนักบรรทุกที่ปลอดภัยของสะพานประเภท Slab Type เนื่องจากผลกระทบของน้ำหนักบรรทุกที่เพิ่มขึ้น และน้ำหนักสูงสุดที่สะพานสามารถรับได้อย่างปลอดภัยโดยตัวอย่างสะพานที่ได้รับการคัดเลือกให้เป็นตัวแทนในการศึกษา คือ สะพานคลองโคกหม้อ ที่กม.104+699 บนถนนทางหลวงหมายเลข 3257 สำนักงานทางหลวงที่ 13 (ประจวบคีรีขันธ์) ในพื้นที่แขวงการทางราชบุรี

จากผลการประเมินความสามารถในการรับน้ำหนักของพื้นสะพาน คานขวาง และเสาตอม่อ พบว่าพื้นสะพานเป็นองค์ประกอบของสะพานที่มีค่า Rating Factor น้อยที่สุด และมีค่าน้อยกว่า 1 ดังนั้นพื้นสะพานจึงเป็นชิ้นส่วนที่มีโอกาสจะวิบัติได้ง่าย สมควรให้ความสำคัญในการตรวจสอบและบำรุงรักษาเป็นอย่างมาก เพื่อความปลอดภัยในการใช้งาน
