จากการสอบสวนเบื้องต้น นายวุฒิพงศ์ ยอมรับว่า ก่อนเกิดเหตุได้แอบสะกดรอยตามเหยื่อสาวไปยังที่พัก ดักซุ่มรออยู่บริเวณรีสอร์ท จนกระทั่งกลางดึกได้ย่องไปที่ห้องพักของผู้เสียหายและพบว่าหน้าต่างปิดไม่สนิท จึงแอบบุกเข้าไปชิงทรัพย์สินและทำร้ายดังกล่าว ก่อนจะคว้าเอาทรัพย์สินไป ไม่ได้พยายามจะข่มขืนเหยื่อสาวแต่อย่างใด
